Herpes Type HSV1 HSV2

Herpes simplex has 2 types. Type 1 (Usually Oral) and Type 2 (Genital). The difference between the two is very little.

The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) can be broken down into two different types. HSV-1 is typically oral herpes where HSV-2 is almost always in the genital region. Without going into all the mind numbing medical details, we figured that we would break it down and explain what the difference is.

Both types share some similarities, such as:

  • Transmitted by skin to skin contact.
  • Look almost identical under a microscope
  • Person may not have any symptoms

Oral Herpes or HSV-1

Oral herpes or HSV-1 is typically associated with those annoying cold sores. This is because cold sores are almost always caused by the herpes virus. They are not to be confused with canker sores, which are totally different. It is estimated that somewhere up to 80% of people have HSV-1 antibodies. The virus usually affects children and remains dormant later on in life. For this reason, it is probably best to keep Aunt Maggie from laying that big smooch on your little one if she is showing signs of a cold sore.

Oral herpes can also go below the belt. If you perform oral sex on your partner, they can be infected with HSV-1 down there. Once there, it can act the same as if they had genital herpes and be able to pass it on to another partner. While not too common, if you have HSV-1, you can still pass the virus even while showing no signs of a cold sore.

Genital Herpes or HSV-2

Genital Herpes or HSV-2 is the one that most people associate getting from through sex as it affects the genital region. While both viruses can have the same effect, this is the one with the bigger stigma associated with it. Like oral, genital herpes is also caused by skin to skin contact and can be easily spread.

If you have genital herpes, you may not show any signs of an outbreak.  The signs can be so mild that experts say two thirds of the infected people have no idea they are infected.

While wearing a condom is prudent, it does not fully protect you from getting or passing along herpes. This is due to the fact that a condom cannot cover the entire area that is exposed.

Can you have HSV1 and HSV2 in the same place?

If you have HSV-2 genitally, it is unlikely that you will also get HSV-1 there as well.  The opposite is also true.  When you have one type of herpes simplex, the body will produce antibodies and some of those are also effective against the other type.

If you have HSV-1 orally, you probably will not also get it in the genitals.  Almost all people with genital HSV-1 never had any prior herpes infection.

While there have been a few very rare cases, HSV-2 typically does not affect the oral region.

What does all this mean?

Just use common sense. If you suspect something is not right, get tested.  If you are sporting a cold sore on your lip, realize that it is most likely herpes and that you can pass it to somebody else.

Still confused?  HWerks has all types and great forums where you can get answers quickly!

I tested positive for HSV1 so how do i know if I have HSV2 i have not had any sores, or anything down there only a lot of itching and i once in a while have like 1 bump that lasts for 2 days kind of like a pimple would that mean that i have HV2?

  2. Dex 12 years ago

    Hi Claudia!
Well, that could mean a few different things:
    1. You could have both HSV1 and HSV2 down there (Odds are very low of this).
    2. You could have either HSV1 or HSV2 down there.
    3. It could just be a pimple, ingrown hair, irritated skin…etc.

The problem with herpes is that you can’t look at something like this and diagnose it yourself. Most people think herpes will look like chicken pox with red bumps everywhere. Symptoms can be very slight or not have any visible signs at all.

Either way, it is always best to see a doctor. Otherwise, you will drive yourself crazy wondering.

I was diagnose with HSV1 genital, I had an Outbreak on genitals, but I haven’t had any on the mouth yet..
    Its been a month now…
I got it from a girlfriend, but she kissed me a lot also that day, so why I haven’t shown any outbreaks on mouth??
I thought that it proffered the oral part, so if its going to Outbreak first it will be on mouth??
Why down there and not oral yet??

I was diagnost with hsv 1 gentially. I would only get a sore on the inside of my leg (upper thigh) once every few years and has become less and less. Recently I had an outbreak on my lady parts. Does this mean I have hsv 2 also? Or could I have an hsv 1 outbreak any where down there? I have to add when the outbreak occured I was very sick with a nasty cold that was going around that compromised my immune system. Please help!

    • Rad 11 years ago

      Hi Rose,
Im glad you have outbreaks every few years, thats very good for you!!!
This is normally cause Genital HSV-1 sheds on average less than 12 days per year and that includes OBs, that said it reocurrs less than HSV2.
Even HSV2 can react the same for some people, having NO OB’s in their lifetime or a couple of ones. But in general, the Genital Hsv1 recurrs 10 times less than hsv2.

Genital Hsv either type 1 or 2 can reocurr anywhere the boxer area, so to answer your first question YES it can reocurr in other areas.

For your second question, it depends if you have been exposed to this hsv2, multiple sexual partners, or maybe your actual partner gave it to you.

BUT, if you are with same partner faithfully both, and you have this from to time, its very likely to be the same HSV1.

Either way, its best to get tested if you are beggining a relationship to know your status and prevent any other transmission, and if your sexually active take precautions, advice your partner of your status, even if its a common thing and dont transmitt that easily cause of the less shedding.

You have dealed with this many years so, i trust you can continue to have a great life and dont let this tiny thing take control of your life.

So in conclusion, this is likely to be the same Hsv1 reocurring in other are, in the boxer short area.

May God Bless You and lots health and success on this New Year for you and your loved ones.

So i was recently diagnosed, its sucks but whatever because life goes on. Im kinda wondering if i could have both 1 & 2. When my doctor called me with the news i didnt ask what strain. But i was also diagnosed with Herpetic Whitlow on my index finger earlier this yr. Thru daily washing i do touch my genitals, but is it possible that i may have spread it to myself? It could have very well been sexually transmitted because the conditions are fitting but i would feel a lot less bad about it if its possible i gave it myself. My Gyn said its possible that i could have but she didnt seem certain enough for me to trust it. Thanks a lot!

  6. Rad 11 years ago

    Hi Lojo,
A herpetic whitlow is a lesion on a finger or thumb caused by the herpes simplex virus. It is a infection that typically affects the fingers or thumbs.
Herpes whitlow can be caused by infection by HSV-1 or HSV-2.
HSV-1 whitlow is often contracted by health care workers that come in contact with the virus; it is most commonly contracted by dental workers and medical workers exposed to oral secretions.
It is also often observed in thumb-sucking children with primary HSV-1 oral infection (autoinoculation) prior to seroconversion, and in adults aged 20 to 30 following contact with HSV-2-infected genitals.

In children the primary source of infection is the orofacial area, and it is commonly inferred that the virus (in this case commonly HSV-1) is transferred by the chewing or sucking of fingers or thumbs.
In adults it is more common for the primary source to be the genital region, with a corresponding preponderance of HSV-2. It is also seen in adult health care workers such as dentists because of increased exposure to the herpes virus.

Autoinoculation can occur if the infection is recent and you don’t have enough antibodies to fight this infection. So in your case it could had happen.
Its important to add that this is contagious so you should take the precautions to not infect others or yourself in other parts if you have this recently.

The fact of autoinoculation is very undefined by many, why do i tell this, well many say that if you have one type for a long time or certain amount of time, your body creates antibodies and it has what it takes to fight it, so its very hard to self-infect other parts of your body, that’s why many say. BUT we’ve heard that it could happens even if you have the antibodies and you’ve been with this for long time, at least thats why other people say.

This said, its important to be tested to know the exact Type, When many people first tell someone they have genital herpes, they start by comparing the infection to oral herpes, or cold sores. How apt is the comparison? In spite of scientific facts, the social stigma and emotional attitudes surrounding genital herpes can make it hard to compare it objectively with an oral infection that most people casually accept. Following the unspoken assumptions of our society, many people still believe there is a “good” herpes virus – HSV-1, the usual cause of cold sores and a “bad” herpes virus – HSV-2, the usual cause of genital herpes.

Under a microscope, HSV-1 and 2 are virtually identical, sharing approximately 50% of their DNA. Both types infect the body’s mucosal surfaces, usually the mouth or genitals, and then establish latency in the nervous system. For both types, at least two-thirds of infected people have no symptoms, or symptoms too mild to notice. However, both types can recur and spread even when no symptoms are present.
The primary difference between the two viral types is in where they typically establish latency in the body – their “site of preference.” HSV-1 usually establishes latency in the trigeminal ganglion, a collection of nerve cells near the ear. From there, it tends to recur on the lower lip or face. HSV-2 usually sets up residence in the sacral ganglion at the base of the spine. From there, it recurs in the genital area.
Even this difference is not absolute, either type can reside in either or both parts of the body and infect oral and/or genital areas.

And why know the type, well this is to know what to expect, to know how many outbreaks you could expect, even if its different for everyone, you could be prepared and start taking precautions and boosting your immune system and if you are in a relationship start taking antivirals to reduce the transmission rate.
Its very important to disclose this to future partners if you have genital Hsv, this is to protect them and make them aware your are taking the right precautions and they are taking their precautions also. Again, this is a common, virus many people have it, but you should talk to your potential partners to disclose this.
This does NOT means your sex life is over, cause its NOT over, its a small bump, but in time, you could learn to deal with it and take the precautions and treatment to reduce the transmission rate.

Its BETTER to go to a medical provider to get your expert professional consultation.

What ever type it is, its something you can deal with it as its a very common virus, so with proper care, precautions, treatment and knowledge of this, you can continue your life normally and healthy!

God Bless and Good Luck on this 2013.

  7. Sarah 11 years ago

I was diagnosed with hsv1 back in 2010… It appeared on my genitals but was informed that I only had the cold-sore virus… I’m trying to educate myself on this embarrassing yet quite common situation. Obviously, when having intercourse a condom is recommended anyways but my concern is if and when the time comes and I decide to have kids, what are the chances of a woman transmitting hsv1 to a male? I’ve only had 2 outbreaks, once in 2010, and one just about 4-5 weeks ago… I took the medicine my gynecologist prescribed for me and it cleared me up great! However, I feel like I can’t enjoy myself sexually anymore due to this virus… What do I do??

  8. Rad 11 years ago

    Hi Sarah,

I know it can be embarrassing, but in time, you will see its not a huge deal.. Doctors may say you had the cold sores virus, cause its Type 1, as you may know the fact you have the Type 1, has an advantage, cause it tends to shed less and outbreaks less, mainly cause its not on its preferred site; this type on genitals, has not sufficient studies cause it sheds so infrequently that its hard to make a study. As you can read on this posts, HSV 1 sheds less than 12 days a year and average (Including outbreaks). Terri Warren states it outbreaks .7 days a year, so yes its very low. On Antivirals, Genital Hsv1 hasnt had any real hard study, cause of the same reason of the shedding. BUT it has had POSITIVE impact on the Outbreaks and some studies performed, so doctors prescribes them and many many have had positive outcome. (Including me 🙂 ). So the transmission genital to genital, its very low; but still possible.

Pregnant women with genital herpes should be careful about passing the virus on to the baby, but NOT overly worried about it.

As stated on the herpes website, If a woman had genital herpes before getting pregnant, or if she is first infected early in pregnancy, the chance that her baby will be infected is very low — less than 1%. Women with genital herpes are examined carefully for any symptoms before giving birth. If sores or signs that an outbreak is coming show up at the time of delivery, the baby may be delivered by cesarean section (also called a C-section).

The risk of infecting the baby is high (30% to 50%) when a woman is NEWLY infected late in pregnancy, however. That’s because the mother’s immune system has not developed protective antibodies against the virus. Women with an older herpes infection have antibodies against the virus, which help protect the baby. If you are pregnant and think you may have been infected recently, tell your doctor right away.

So whats are the Ways to Avoid Getting Herpes While Pregnant

Women who don’t have genital herpes should be careful about sex during the third trimester. Unless you know for sure that your partner is herpes free, avoid sex altogether during the third trimester. If your partner gets cold sores (oral herpes), he or she should not perform oral sex on you during this time.

Some doctors think all women should be tested for herpes when they get pregnant, especially if their sex partners have herpes. Ask your doctor if you or your partner should be tested.
    Genital Herpes Treatment During Pregnancy

Women taking antiviral drugs for herpes — either daily suppressive therapy or occasional therapy for outbreaks — SHOULD Always consult their doctor about whether to take the drugs during pregnancy. The answer is not set in stone: You and your doctor have to discuss the risks and benefits to decide what’s right for you.

Herpes infection in a newborn is also serious. Do not allow anyone with a cold sore on the mouth to kiss the baby. If you have a cold sore, don’t kiss the baby, and wash hands with soap and water before touching the baby.

This website has useful information, dont worry you can have a normal naturally birth if all goes well http://www.herpes.com/pregnancy.shtml

Many people give natural birth with herpes, but if you have an OB durign birth well C-section will be performed) HEY Victoria Beckham, Angelina Jolie and Beyonce among many starts LOOKS amazing after C-Section LOL>>!! You can Look amazing also if its a matter of making that decision and have healthy babys also!! 🙂

After reading and talking with doctors, heres what some could conclude, The risk of HSV transmission should never be the main determinant of what people do sexually.
In any case, I think the risk of transmission from woman to man, without using condoms and just avoiding sex during outbreaks, is around 4%/year. With condoms and suppressive therapy, I think it’s somewhere around 1 – 2%/year. However, there are periods of asymptomatic shedding, so you could literally be contagious at any time. Still, the risks are pretty small. This is a decision only the two of you can make, though. Most genital HSV-1 infections are asymptomatic or cause very mild symptoms. So if your partner gets infected, or does get symptoms, effective treatment is available. BUT ITS Important to say again that HSV-1 has very low changes of transmission genital to genital, cause of the shedding and preferred location. BUT YES there is a chance (small) and they have been cases of gen to gen transmission in Hsv1 genital.

The first priority is for your boyfriend to be tested for HSV-1 infection. Since its estimated more than 70% of the American population is infected, there is a fair chance he already has it. In that case, you have no worries; he is immune to getting reinfected from you. There as debate saying you can still re-infect him in other location, BUT Still there has not been hard evidence that I’m aware of. YES, if the person is recently infected, and not enough antibodies are present it can re-infect other locations. But as ive read and you can confirm with your doctor (ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR); if he has had HSv1 for a certain period of length (time), the chances are close to 0 to not say impossible.

Assuming he is susceptible (i.e., negative HSV-1 blood test) and you decide together to try to avoid infecting him (Even if the chances are low), you have three options: avoid sex when you have symptoms (symptoms) (presumably not a problem since you’re not having outbreaks); condoms; and antiviral therapy for you (Remember Antivirals hasn’t had much study but YES it has been proven to have a positive outcome with HSV1 also.

What to do?? Let me address some of the questions doctors have answered, many reasonable questions you may have.

Always use condoms? No and its up to you and him; Its recommended, but Even if you decide to use condoms most of the time, there still small chance to pass this even with condoms. AGAIN, Genital Hsv1 has a very Low chance of spreading genital to genital, but its possible, so take you precautions and analyze your risks with your partner.
My friend you really could have a smart healthy sex life after all.

Many couples and partners, go through their entire sexual lives without transmitting any types of HSV. So being Smart and taking the proper precautions Your chances are pretty good.

Dont worry, Sarah, everything will be alright, most of this is emotional and Mentally; after all you have all your life ahead of you. Live, Enjoy, travel, meet people and have SMART Fun!!
Remember you have the ball on your court!! I know you can do this!

This is like having a cold, it comes and goes, so its something common, don’t worry, you’ll be alright!! SEX life is NOT over, its the beginning of a more healthy living 😉
I trust you can do this, you’ll be FINEEEE 😉 !!!

    Lots of Luck!!

I got my results today by way of a company that does AnyLab Testing. So they don’t interpret the test for you. So I’m rather lost.

    In Range Out of Range
    HSV1 3.19 H

    HSV 2 <0.09
    Index Interpretation
    1.10 Positive

So the way i read this is that I have HSV1.

But I had symptoms 30 years ago on my genitals and then in 2011 I had an outbreak. Otherwise nothing.

I’ve never had a cold sore on my mouth.

SO what does this really mean. I’m starting to see a guy and want to be informative as I can. 30 years ago I was married and my husband did have cold sores. In 2011 if i remember correctly that partner had cold sores also. But not often. I only remember him having a cold sore once. So this could be totally transmitted thru cold sores and oral sex?

    Thank you,
    Peggy

    SO i have

  10. karen 11 years ago

    Hi,

I get a couple cold sores a year. This year ive had two back to back. Ive never went to the dr bc they go away with abreva or I catch them early and ice the area and nothing really develops. I noticed a bump on my labia but its painless and not visible I can just feel it. I looked online and it said it could be a cyst. Is it possible to give myself genital herpes??

    • Dex 11 years ago

      @Karen
I would definitely get that looked at. It doesn’t sound like herpes but you never know.

  11. Catherine 10 years ago

I have genital herpes (Unknown 1 or 2) I have had it for many years. I have about 3 flair-ups a year. If an uninfected person gave me oral sex, is it possible that he could contract what I have?

  12. Dex 10 years ago

    Hi Cathrine!

The short answer is “Yes.” It is possible. HSV1 (Oral) much prefers the oral region but it can also be contracted in the genital area. So yes, if this person gave you oral sex and you have HSV1, it is possible that he can be infected. HSV2 (Genital) almost always remains in the genital area. Most scientists say that HSV2 in the oral region would be extremely rare. If you have HSV2 then it would be even more rare to get HSV1 as well. We are talking getting hit by lightning rare and some don’t even think it is possible as no cases have been reported of it happening.

Here’s the thing, more people in the US and over 18 have HSV1 than don’t. That number goes up the the older you get. Cold sores are almost always caused by HSV1.

So, you don’t have to give up oral sex just because you have herpes. Just use common sense and inform your partner. While the risk may be small, it is still possible. The next time you visit the doctor, maybe have them type you so you know what HSV you do have.

  13. Bryan 10 years ago

I’m not sure which type I have. I had it both orally and genitally. My girlfriend is not infected. Will she be able to perform oral sex on me? How can I tell which is which since I had both?

  14. Rad 10 years ago

    Hi Bryan!
Well in theory, its almost impossible to have same type on both areas..
    But it can happend!
Hsv2 on mouth is very rare, and if you get it outbreaks are very very very rare!! So if you have normal outbreaks on lips, Ussually means is hsv1.

This said; we are speculating, so the ONLY way to know is by taking a swab test on the blister!

Even though, if she performs oral, hsv1 or hsv2 could be transmitted to her mouth!

But as you may know, if there are no visible sores or blisters, chances are low!!
But remember we shed even with no visible ob; so theres always a risk!

Ive been 3 yrs married with a Non H; and we use protection when i feel something may come up! Even with no visible blister.. Rest of the time almost always we dont use nothing!

Your GF knows the risks, and if you take care and be very carefull you will be fine!

    Regards

I was diagnosed with genital herpes ( I’ve only had it in/on my genitals, not oral) in 2005, and have been taking Valtrex for suppressive therapy since then. Is it possible to get reinfected by someone who has either strain of herpes, and/or if I have oral sex with someone who is infected? I should also note that I take the Valtrex to suppress shingles.

  16. Dex 10 years ago

    Hi Michelle!

Although you take Valtrex for suppression, your genital herpes (HSV2) can reoccur at any time. Somebody, who also has genital herpes, can’t give it to you again. Now, it is possible that you can get oral herpes (HSV1) from someone who also has HSV1. The 2 types of herpes are pretty much identical, they just have a preference on what part of the body they want to reside in.

  17. jayde 10 years ago

My sister in-law was just diagnosed with herpes and well my question is…can she give it to my 9 month old son if she touches or kisses him? Shes already embarrassed about it and i dont want her feelings to get hurt but i also dont want my son to get it.

    • Rad 10 years ago

      Hi jayde
If its Oral HSV, answer is Yes!

Actually there is a big percentage of people that has the oral type,
That were transmitted when children by their relatived.

If the blister is not visible the chances are very low; even though
We shed without having an OB.

Cold Sores are very common in the US almost 80%
      Of people have it.

Relax, if she doesnt have the blister chances are low that
She would get it by a hello kiss..

If its HSV2; theres no way she would transmitt this to
      Your son.

I have genital herpes, assuming HSV2, because I break out once to twice a year. normally from stress of some sort. Well today I believe I’ve found a canker sore in my mouth, but I’m worried about having possibly spread it to my mouth because I’m currently having an outbreak. I’m also worried that I could have spread it to my partner while giving him oral or kissing him before I felt the sore.. I feel like I wouldnt forgive myself if he did get it from me..

    • Rad 10 years ago

      Hi Anna!!
well, it could vary drastically by person!! But yes, normally type 2 OB more than type 1 on gens!
That said, ive talked to people with type 1 having 5-6 IB a year or more!

Only way is to get tested, you can get tested to see what type you have!
      And test your partner also.

Canker sore inside of a mouth are another type of sore!!
      So relax!!!!

I suggest that you go get tested to see if you only have type 2, this way its better for you to prepare and talk with your partners!

So relax, canker sores are very different than HSV by far!
      No worried there!

Please always talk to partner, this is very common and many have this, but they should have knowledge and should understand that there is a risk!

You are doing great, if you need anything just ask!

Hey Rad, I just wanted to follow up and let you know my partner is already aware. I told him before we had sex the first time. The sore in my mouth has already gone down it just scared me because I’ve never had one before and having it happen for the first time during an outbreak made me freak out, especially since I’d been doing oral for my partner the day before I found the canker sore. I have been tested but it was all so confusing at the time I got the call, especially when I had no knowledge of anything about it then. Thank you for responding to me. I was worried no one would.

Theres no problem, i can understand the frustration and the stress this can give!

Hi i just got diagnosed of hv2 and i am a diabetic. I have gotten bumps that look mosquito bites on my legs. Also under my arms. I haven’t recieved them on my genitals yet which is scary. I contracted this from my husband and which he wont talk about it. So is it common to break out in other areas and should i go ahead and start the meds. Eager to know

    • Rad 10 years ago

      Hi Deatress,
First of all, its important to talk with husband about this, second you said you had been diagnose, so this im thinking by swab or blood test.

Why did you get tested for HSV?? You said you haven had OB on gens but why did you get tested.

HSV 2 on genitals can appear anywhere in the boxer short area.

In legs and arms probably mosquito as you say.

HSV 2 on oral its very uncommon but it could happend, this said the probably of having an OB by HSV2 on oral its almost 1%…

So just relax, talk with husband and clear things up and help each other!

Dont start meds if its not neccesary!

Good morning and thanks for replying. I started having a yellowish thick discharge and I thought it was trich because my husband has given me this numerous times before. Back in Jan. of this year I was tested for all stds and it came back clear. So when i went two months ago for the discharge i was tested again and it came back positive for hsv2! Like i said i have only had the red bumps in different areas and i am watching those closely. The discharge on the other hand is still around alittle but i am taking meds for that. My husband won’t talk cause he is guilty and i don’t know how this will end up for us. Thank you so much for listening.

I have had fever blisters all my life – always on or around my mouth and never on the genital area. My partner of many decades was recently diagnosed of Type 1 & 2 on the sacral area, just above the buttocks. He denies any discretion, and maintains he has never had sex with another partner. My question is, could he have gotten both types from oral sex with me, keeping in mind I have never had another sexual partner since him either. He does admit to being very promiscuous before we got together – is it possible he could have contacted particularly the type 2 way back that many years before, since I have never had a genital outbreak

    • Rad 10 years ago

      Hi,
      Well difficult to say!!
You could get tested blood igg for type 1 and 2.

This way you could presume that it was transmitted by you.

Its very difficult to know, what test did he did IGM or IGG, if ir was the IGM probably was a recent infection, IGG could have been months ago.

Hard to know honey, just get tested to find out what type do
You have and start from there!! Dont assume, get some facts!

      You will be ok!
If you need anything else, well be here!
      Regards

  22. Rad 10 years ago

Ohh and Type 2 some dont even have outbreaks, but most of the time they are often.
So its not common to be contrated and outbreak years later, cause our body when it gets attack by this virus outbreaking the first time ; it starts to build antibodies to fight this virus and maintain this dormant.

But it could Happend! So its just hear and say! And mostly the TRUST you have in him!

You will work this out, i know it!!

    Hello,
I’m dating someone who has HSV 1. I recently found out I have HSV 2. Can we infect one another or is there antibodies for the resistance?

    • Rad 10 years ago

      Hi Michelle,
Answer is simply YES, you can infect him and he can infect you.
So just be careful and you could have a normal life!

When you get a virus you build antibodies for that type, thats why in
The future you cant get the same type on other parts cause you are already
Fighting and have all those antibodies build up!

Because you don’t have antibodies of type 1 and he doesnt have antibodies for
Type 2, you can either transmit this to each other!

Just relax, everything’s gonna be fine, you both could understand the common of
This virus!! So its a win for both of you!

      Take care

    Hi,
I was wondering a few things. I was told when i was a lot younger that i have hsv1. Now fast forward 12 years and two kids later, i have what i think is a first ob of genital herpes. My partner swears he hasnt cheated, and also has never had symptoms of the virus. But after reading through this entire page-and a few others- it seems to me that because ive never had another ob i would have just contracted hsv2 recently, (because its highly unlikely to get hsv1 in a second spot years later, also because the first outbreak usually shows up soon after infection) and we have been together for years that he had to have strayed. What I am really looking for is kind of a factt check here to make sure im understanding everything.
    Manily 1, i most likey do not have a new hsv1 in the genital area, because I have had it orally at least 12 years,and thus would almost have to be a secondary hsv2 infection ;
    2 if a person gets outbreaks, the first one occurs soon after infection. Or is possible that I could have had it previously and only now developing outbreaks ;
3 Hsv2 is shed more frequently and thus, if I aquire it from an undiagnosed and unmedicated partner it would be earlier in the unprotected relationship rather than later?

    Thanks ,
    Becca

    • Rad 10 years ago

      Hi Becca,
To answer all of your questions in a short way..
Its very common to have contracted Type 1 as a kid, by family members kissing etc.

If you have type 1 on genitals, it can reocurr antwhere in the boxer shorts same as type 2.
Difference is the freqency; and that said some can have more or less In either of them.

•Its very common to have an outbreak when recently infected; so you are correct.
But that said you MUST get tested IGM and IGG to verify if it could be recent.
Many people with HSV dont even know they have it so, people sometimes carry this virus and contract their partners without knowing..

•Very unlikely; to not say impossible to contract type 1 on different area years after infection.

•Quick answer of your 3rd, its NO.. If he has type 2 and he doesnt outbreak that much or doesnt outbreak at all.. Maybe youve had relations with him and he wasnt shedding those days, so its possible that you got it years later cause he wasnt taking precautions.

      Hope i answered your questions

I was recently diagnosed with hsv2 and it was given to me by my former partner who knew he had it but didn’t inform me. Is there a way it can be typed or a genetic sequence of some sort to show that it was in fact him who gave it to me?

  26. Beth 9 years ago

I forgot to say that it’s been about 4 months since I was infected and subsequently had an OB and was then diagnosed. Is it too late for the blood test to show whether or not it was a recent occurrence?

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Hi Beth,
      First question, is NO..
Theres no way you can know if it was from him. That said, there is always a “BUT”, if you havent had any relations with anyone outside of the relationship well you could have a very good idea!

IGM test is NOT that reliable but if its a recent infection, it could be positive for up to 6-12 weeks..

If it has been 4 months, its too late!

Thing is that you must concentrate on you!!! You know who have this to you! You can talk to him like a responsible person; this way he could understand the risk of him not saying this to his partners.

You will be fine and your life will stay the same!

If you have any questions let us know!

    Hi Beth!

Unfortunately, there is not a way to tell that it was him who gave you herpes. The time frame sounds correct because it can take anywhere from 2-5 months for the antibodies to show up depending on the blood test.

While some people with herpes are asymptomatic (Showing no symptoms and may not know they are infected) there are the others who who choose to ignore it and spread it to others. Most of us with herpes were not given that choice.

Just remember that having herpes does not define who you are. Keep your chin up, stay strong and you will see that things really do get better.

I have been with my boyfriend for 15 years now. Since the beginning, he would get a cold sore on his lip at least once or twice a year when he was sick or under stress. We would avoid contact during the days he had a sore. Recently, my gynecologist saw a blister just inside my vagina and we did a blood test. It came back saying I had HSV 1. Obviously, I got it at some point from my boyfriend, since the bloodtest showed I had a large amount of immunity from the virus.

Thing is…my boyfriend now refuses to have sex with me unless we use a condom. He said he’s afraid of getting the sores on his penis. I have told him many times that he gave me the virus and that he can’t “reinfect” himself again! I am sure we’ve had sex many times over they years when I had an active sore too, as I can remember a few times when it was painful, and he’s never gotten a blister during those times!!
How do I reassure him that it’s still okay for he and I to have sex without a condom? It’s almost like, for him, that knowledge is not power, but is instead causing him to freak-out and see me as somehow “damaged” or “infectious” to him, even though he gave it to me!!! We’ve been doing it for many years now without a condom and he’s never gotten reinfected! Please help me convince him that he’s safe with me!!!! Thanks!

    • Rad 9 years ago

Thing is that, if he has hsv1, then he has antibodies fighting this virus and he cannot get reinfected with something he already has.

Just look at the Famous “Ebola” Virus, how are they curing this?? Well the first thing the do is go to the patients who survived and take their blood for the antibodies and injected to the new patient!!

      So it could fight this!!

Another example; chicken pox, whe our kids get this, we tried to get his brother or her sister infected (if they are old enough), so they could pass yhis onced and for all!! And never get it again.

Conclusion of this is that its impossible to get this while having it already!! He has the antibodies already in his body for many year now!!

He infected you and its a childish atittude!!

This is very common, and he should get educate about his conditi

I recently found out i have type 2. While I’m still in shock about it. I’m very worried abouy it since i have 3 small children. my concern is ill pass it to them. I’m a very loving mom. hugs, kisses ect. Will i pass it to them thru any of that? My daughter for example keeps useing my tooth brush. I’m terrified they are going get it. plz help.

  30. Dex 9 years ago

    Hi Alockhart!

While a valid concern, you really don’t have to worry about it too much. This topic will pop up in our forums from time to time. Not only were there women with small kids in the same situation, others gave birth while having herpes and their kids turned out fine.

Since you have HSV2, it is genital and not oral. The virus dies almost immediately in the open so you can’t pass it by sharing a towel, toothbrush…etc.

However, just use common sense. Basically, washing your hands after using the bathroom or touching the area during or when you feel an outbreak coming on should be more than enough.

So, keep giving your children all the love that you have been 🙂

so ive had symptoms of an std for quite some time, but when I get tested I have zero result. I was told I do have hsv1. does that cause discharge also though? my doctor wasn’t to helpful and I still havnt got treatment. been wanting to get an appointment but what can I do to make her see cause its like she doesn’t take me serious when I clearly have issues. Im 99.% sure I have hsv1 on my genitals due to sex. can she give me something for the discharge?
    thank you for your time

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Hi,
When you say quite sometime it means how many days, weeks??

Discharge for Hsv1 can happend when you first get this.. This happenda because of the inflammation inside.

This will go eventually, you can start antivirals and wait untill everything os back to normal.

This type of discharge does not occurs in many patients; but yes it does ocurr.

It will go and i t shouldnt come back on the outbreaks.

Hope you got tested the right way for all STDs.

I don’t understand what else it could be since nothing else comes up…

I am female. and yea it is present but it doesn’t come back as anything but it is clearly infection (order) redness, burning sometimes when urinating.

    Hi,

I been wondering what I could do to help reduce, my 6 year son’s outbreak on his face. He was dignosed with HVS1 at the age of 2 years in which I believe that his dad gave it to him. Although, he clearly denies this. My son has had at least two outbreaks each year. Its really embrassing to him and myself because I have to bring him out into the public. I see people staring trying to figure out what he has on his face. I just want to know if this outbreak will be less frequent as he gets older. And what special curing home remedies could I use to make his outbreak less noticable .

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Hi Tamara,
You just have to know what its triggering the outbreak.
It maybe the sun, or other foods that could trigger this..

If its sun, be sure to use sunblock and lip uv protector.

And if its food!! Try to avoid them!!

Fact is that 1-2 OB a year is not bad..

It will tend to get better un time!!

So try to boost his inmune system, eat better, exercise, vitamins and protect from sun!

      You will do just fine!

Almost the 80% of americans have hsv1..

      So its normal!! Relax!

      God bless my friend!

Hello, I have been dating my boyfriend for 2 years now, I am very young; I am still in high school. He has had HSV since he was a little kid (assuming its HSV-1 because he always would get sores on his lips) and recently he has gotten two in the past 8 months or so since I’ve been with him. One time this summer, and the second is now. I was just diagnosed with HSV-1 below the belt. I believe this occurred because of him giving me oral or his saliva coming in contact with my genitals. I am confused as to what this means for me in terms of the rest of my life. Will I always get outbreaks as bad as I have right now? I never had this before, so I know I must have gotten it from him. I can hardly go to the bathroom it hurts so bad, and I do not even know how to tell him that I have it now. Does this mean oral is not an option anymore and will I always get outbreaks in my genitals or is this a one time thing? I may have misunderstood my doctor when she was telling me that if I have HSV-1 (which i just found out I do) that it is just ONE episode that will not reoccur. I am so confused and scared!
    Thanks

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Rose,
Hope you arw doing better, first of all sorry you have been dealing with this situation.. HSV type 1 on gen is milder than hsv 2, so in that way its better for you. Also the outbreaks of type 1 on gens are less than OB on mouth.

Please tell him, as he did give this to you.. It will make you feel better because he has it also.

He can still perform oral on you as he wont get this again, and even on his gens because he has the antibodies.

Your life will continue normal, as time goes by, OB will tend to be milder and short. Outbrwaks could be 1-2 yearly maybe less, some dont get outbreaks in years..

You always have the option to take antivirals.

You can take hot bath and try to always keep dry.

Everything will be ok, believe me!!
      God Bless

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Hi Jeff,
Reinfected is very rare to not Say IMPOSSIBLE; you see, you already have the antibodies for type 1.

So chances are very low close to 0.

Hell, even NOT having HSV and she having type 1 on gens, chances are low to contract this to you if you abstain when the ob its present.

Almost all the time that this virus spreads its because partners dont disclouse and some dont even know they have it..

Just relax, have fun, live life and love your girlfriend, because this is not an obstacle for you right now!
      God Bless my friend!

Hi, I feel as though I have been on a roller coaster ride of emotions lately as I am getting mixed information from professionals regarding the transmission of HSV1. Here are the facts, I’m 38 and have had HSV1 on my mouth since I was 15 (outbreak 2X/year average). My girlfriend and I recently began dating and she informed me that she had transmitted HSV1 genitally from a past boyfriend through oral sex 5 years ago (outbreak 1X/year average). Since we both have built antibodies against HSV1, here are my specific questions:
    1. What is the likelihood that I can be re-infected with HSV1 genitally if we have unprotected sex with no symptoms or signs of her having an outbreak?
    2. Does the likelihood that I can be re-infected increase should we have unprotected sex while a.asymptotic shedding is occurring or
    b. if a blister is present (which we would never do of course)
    3. Am I immune from genital HSV1 which would technically make her immune from Oral HSV1?

I’m feeling frustrated because on one hand, a std specialist had told me that we are the perfect combo because we are both immune and can NOT reinfect the other. And on the other, I have spoken with other trained professionals, even an std clinic who said that I can in fact be re-infected despite having protective antibodies. Thank you in advance for taking the time to help us out because this “unknown” is taking a toll on us.

    Hi..

I have received hsv 1 in my genital area from my partner from oral, since he has the hsv 1 virus he gets on his lips. i was wondering if you would know, if i can still kiss him now or if i have the chance of getting the virus on my lips. or, if since now i already have the virus down there, i can’t get it on my lips too?

    Nevi

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Hi Nevi,

The fact that you just got this type 1, the body is building antibodies, so you must be carefull for the next months…

After your body is stable with the antibodies, you will be able to be less carefull.

If you both have antibodies for type one chances are very low, to not say impossible.

Hope you live happy and dont let this define you!

      You will be ok!!

      Best Regards and God Bless

Recently diagnosed positive for hsv 1 and 2 by labcorp igg specific
    Hsv 1 40.0
    Hsv 2 4.2

Never had any outbreaks oral or genital

Some professionals consider index low/possible false positive for hsv 2 anything below 2.0 < highest 3.5

Some say index hsv 2 positive below 5 consider confirmatory testing.

Since hsv 1 and 2 share 50% identical DNA is it possible if you have a high igg hsv 1 to cause a false positive for hsv 2

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Hi,
The fact that you havent got any outbreak is more difficult to answer your question, you have a point when you say the DNA.

But testing for virus they search for your antibodies, so the fact is low maybe could be considere positive but you can always retest after at least 8 weeks.

Better test is the Swab, but you dont have outbreaks so you have to rely on the blood test.

Dont worry you will be fine!!

You dont have outbreaks so you’re lucky!!! 🙂

Relax and continue living life as always!

Hello. I’ve had some pretty bad symptoms like high fever, chills, backpain and throat swelling. I went to the the doctor and confirmed that I have herpes. I have some sores on my lip which is spreading and the first sore that came out on my bottm, along with the other surrounding it, is now getting a huge scab. There is now a little sore on the left and center of my top lip. Also the doctor told me I have a throat infection which makes anything edible including water, impossible to intake. Feels like it’s scarping my throat. I am taking my medications but I’m still worried if it doesn’t go away.also, a white little thing came out on my tongue and I’m worried it’s apreading in my mouth. I am still in high school and I haven’t done an oral since 4 months ago. Can you please tell me the cause and what I should do?

Hi just a question. I have been diagnosed yrs ago (15yrs) with hsv2 in the genital region. I must of auto infected myself at the time on my finger and palm of hand where iv been having outbreaks 3/4 x a yr for the last 8 yrs. its definately hepatic whitlow hsv2. I had it checked out when i became preg. Im scared i can pass this on to my toddler? If i have an outbreak can he catch hsv2 from my herpatic whitlow? Im so scared to touch my son during an outbreak that
I already use disposable gloves when i know iv an outbreak as well as covering the area with a dressing. its just for my own knowledege. If he caught hsv from me would he get hsv2 or 1?

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Hello,
Aridni, oral hsv type 1, its so common, even Celine Dion has it!!
      So just dont worry!!

      Sarah,
I know you are concerned about the baby..
First of all, did you had your son natural labor?? Did you told your Dr. About your hsv??

Well if your son gets HSV he would get type 2, cause your type is 2..

It dont matter where it is; it will still type 2.

From personal experience working with whitlow, its has to do with what you do with your hands!!

Soaps for cleaning, dishes, laundry, hurting your hands or even the sun exposure..

Although Whitlow could be hurful, some dont experience so much pain..

Its very important to make a diary, so you could figure out what could be triggerong the Outbreaks, maybe some foods, for some is alcohol, many say the soap while making dishes, so the up to use gloves..

You have been years with this, i kbow you could have an idea what could it be triggering this…

Just take care of the blisters when they are out, and use band aids and other kids of protection to protect your kids.

You will be fine, i know you will be in top of this and will lessen this OBs to almost non a year.

      Regards

    Hello
I was diagnosed with herpes about 30 years ago I remember an outbreak back then but I haven’t had any since..

    Can I still Infect someone?

  41. Rad 9 years ago

    Hi Nance,
Yes indeed you can infect another person.

But the fact that you dont have visible outbreaks it lowers the chances on infecting others.

As you may know chances are low even when you experience outbreaks; that is if you stop having sex while in OB, and using protection could lower the risk close to 0%.

The important thig here is to be aware and always disclouse this to your partner.

But if your not having outbreaks chances are low!!

Hi, me and my gf have been together for six years now. She infected me with hsv2 way back when and I have had this virus for about five or so more years. We lead a pretty active sexual life between us. I always try to avoid giving her oral sex when she may have a breakout. Well just so happen lights were off one night and turns out I did the deal very briefly ( 30 secs – one min ). Next morning she informed me she did have a outbreak. Am I at risk for getting hsv2 oral now? My thinking is since I have hsv2 already in my genital area, antibodys should be built up by now and maybe I am worried for no reason? Thank for any help.

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Hey Johnny,
      Indeed you are correct..

The chances are almost 0 to get infected with the same virus in other part of the body, after 5 years with this virus. Your antibodies have been fighting this since long time ago. The re-infection in other areas are common, when its on its first days or weeks when your body is creating antobodies.

Relas you are in the clear on that situation!

My x and I year together a while but we did have a lot of brakes during that time frame. But since our last brake up a couple month after I went to the obgyn for my annual. She called me and said I came out positive for HPV. I was in such shock. So then she informed me she wanted to do a Colposcopy. Then I asked during the pap if I came out positive for any other std or sti she said she didn’t test because supposedly you have to request that.. Wow I never heard of that but OK . she said that with biopsy she took from the colposcopy that she would test me for the most common STDs but I informed her I wanted to be tested for allllll . she said that there are some std that need to be tested through blood such as hepatitis HIV syphilis and herpes. I told her fine I rather be safe than sorry because I obviously I had no symptoms of HPV. I just want to be sure .she was a little shocked that I wanted all those test done. She told me that I would have to schedule an appointment I TD her no just give me the lab request and I’ll take to my family Dr. So I week later I got my results for the HPV and its at stage one thank god . she didn’t recommend and medications or surgery she just said I will need to have a pap every 6 months for two year if it progresses then she will take further action but being that I’m so young (21) my body’s should fight the virus . so that same day I get a call from my family Dr concerning my blood results I came out negative for all std but herpes came back positive . she told me it could be that I’ve had a lesion or a cold sore .that was all she told me …well of course I freaked out and got on line and did research she never told me what type just that it could be cold sores or lesions . so I called back to see if they could tell me what type the told me the Dr would call me the next day. I do have fever blister that I get inside the mouth but its very rare. The next day I get a call not from the Dr but from her nurse saying that my Dr said it could be either oral or gential . I freaked out I explained I’ve never had a brake out and that I haven’t been sexually active for more than 3 months .then the nurse well it could just be the cold sores or a lesion. I told her what type do I have she said you rested positive for both hsv1 and hsv2 . I still have yet to talk to my Dr. I want to know more because they just brushed it off as if wasn’t a big deal .didn’t explain anything to me just that I could be my so called fever blisters . I just want to know .since I’m positive for both and never had an out brake does it mean I will have one . how can I have hsv2 and her say I just might be a cold sore if that was the case why didn’t I I just positive for hsv1 instead for both ??? I’m really confused and I made an appointment for next week but I’m driving my self crazy . I’m constantly checking my area seeing if I can see anything unusual . wouldnt have the colposcopy shown if I had herpes in my gential area?

  44. Very confusing 9 years ago

I was diagnosed with hsv-1 in the genital region A couple of months after I turned 21, I am now 31 and about to be 32 in the next few months. I contracted it from a new partner that I then went on to be with for a year n a half because I felt I would be undesirable to anyone else so I tried to stick with him as long as I could tolerate him, he claimed he never had anything, but then a few months down the line I point out a cold sore on his lip n he said, well I have been getting those since I was a kid, so many people are so uneducated that cold sores around the mouth are herpes n most people contract it when they are kids. I hate that it is more socially acceptable for people not to disclose it when they have it around their mouth but it is a must when you have it around the genitals. I have never fully been able to enjoy oral sex again since that is how I contracted it, it’s like it left a painful scar n brings me back to a time I wish I could take back since this was someone I never wanted something serious with to begin with.

But here is my main question, after my first initial outbreak which was very severe, I went 4 years without ever having another one, the next one I did have was so mild I barely noticed it. I then went another year n half or maybe a little longer without one again, I was in a new relationship at that time n never had one with him n he never contracted anything, after we broke up(which was not a good breakup) I was very hurt n upset n basically had sex with the first guy who came along, the sex was very vigorous n caused some chafing n a couple days later I had some bumps down there, ever since that time I have had more frequent outbreaks. After that time in the next year I may have had one to 3 n then from the end of 2011 up until now I get them even more frequently, end of 2011 I started taking l lysine but it seemed to make it worse, as soon as it cleared up, I came down with another one n then another one after 3 in a row I stopped taking it, I could have just been stressed to though cuz I was talking with someone that was interested in me n I didn’t want to have to have the talk with them, it is easier for me just to abstain from sex n not date so I don’t have to have that dreaded talk. I have had 3 now just in the last 6 months. I always thought over time you would get less and less especially with hsv1 in the genital region but now they seem to be increasing in frequency, The one I am dealing with now is actually in a spot where I never get them, usually it is just 1 n it’s on the inside almost always the same spot, moves around every once in awhile. Right now there are about 16 teeny tiny ones that just look almost like razor burn but I know they aren’t since I have been dealing with this for 10 yrs and they are on the outside near the crease of my leg. I’m just wondering if it’s possible that I contracted hsv2 and that’s why I am having more frequent ones now because it just seems odd that in the last few years I get them more often now n now in a place where I haven’t had them since my first initial outbreak and then the time in 2009 after the chafing. I do, do pole dancing as well and I know it is rare to pick up things from inanimate objects but it is right in the area that touches the pole n if a girl that used it just minutes before me could have left something on there even though I wipe it down with alcohol I don’t think that is full proof, it’s just been bugging me because I never get them outside of my pantyline n now all of the sudden that’s where they are. And sliding down the pole causes friction and if I just shaved that means the skin is open and exposed. I would just like your opinion on all this, I know I should just go get tested to see if I have both now, but after doing so much research I thought the chances were very slim of contracting the other type in the same area especially after being so careful n abstaining from sex for so long unless it was with someone I was serious with. Any thoughts will just help ease my mind in the meantime, thanks

      Hi “Very Confusing”,
Im so sorry this has been very rough on you.

The OB could be because of many triggers!!

First stress, is the worst trigger, some say not having a good rest triggers this also.

friction is something that could produce this!! Dancing on pole maybe causing irritation and causing this OB.

Can you get HSV cause of the pole?? Well technically yes!! BUT its very rare because this virus doesnt live on the outside “oxygen” so it dies on the outside, thats why it OB then it dies on the outside.

Well if you have been sexually active it could be you got HSV2 also and its OB more.

You have to be tested to be sure.

In the mean time just look for triggers!!

Honey i know its stressfull and annoying but you have to get yourself together and see what trully makes you happy and do what its best to your Health.

This HSV is so common and it does NOT i mean NOT defines you; so be happy and enjoy yourself cause this is something that wont do harm to you.

Yes disclosure is the best way because you are beinn honest; but its a very common virus that almost all of the times the disclosure will work!

Dont hesitate to ask again if you need anything!

      God Bless and Take Care!

Hello, I’ve been with my husband for 15 years just recently I went to the doctors because I started to have discomfort and bumps around my vagina. The doctor said I have gential herpes. My husband has herpes(cold sores) since he was young. Every time he had an outbreak we would never kiss or have oral sex. This time there was no sore, we had sex and oral sex too. So I’m confused why I got gential herpes when we have been so careful?

  46. Rad 9 years ago

    Hi Jen,
Sorry youve been dealing with this..
First and the biggest question, did you test for Herpes?? If so what type do you have???

Remember type 1 could be on genitals also..; BUT you must be sure its type 1.

If its type 1 is well thing is that sometimes on oral sores, they are not so visible and you can get this on genitals without seeing this.

Also if its type 1 you will have less outbreaks than type 2..

In the other had if its type 2, you mist check your husband, to see if he has type 1 and type 2..

Maybe he has genital herpes type 2 and gave this to you.. Dont get this the wrong way thinking that he cheated!! But you have to be aware of all of the probability.

You will be ok!!! Trust me!
If you have any questions, please let us know.
    Regards

i have had HSV-1 common cold sore my a long time now with out any outbreaks. This girl i made love to 2 weeks ago told me that i gave her HSV-2 genital Herpes. If i have oral HSV-1 Can i get genital HSV-2.

    • Rad 9 years ago

      The short answer is NO..

If you have Type 1 is Type 1!!!

Although you can give her Type 1 on the genitals.

The best thing ia both of you get tested.. This way you can see what type you both have..

You can also get type 2 orally..

Thing is that outbreaks will be milder and recurrence tend to be less when type 1 is on gen and or type 2 is oral.

      Take Care

      • dave 9 years ago

Thanks. So what your saying is if i have hsv-1 oral herpes i can’t get hsv-2 genital. i’m aware that i can get hsv-1 genital Through oral sex.

        • Rad 9 years ago

No, its the other way around; If you have type 1 right now, You cant get type 1 on gens, because you already have the antibodies.. So your body will fight any virus trying to grow on you.. That said is a straight now, if you have type 1 oral, you cannot get type on gens..

And Yes you can get type 2 on gens or oral…

You must protect yourself from type 2.

What i said is that you can give your partner type 1 on his or hers genitals..

Let me know if you understand.

    Hi,

I have been giving a lot of oral sex to my male partner in the past few days. I woke up with a bad cold sore on my lower lip the next morning (swollen as well). I have two questions: 1) is it just irritation from performing numerous Oral sex ? Or 2) did he have HSV1 or HSV2 dormant and pass it to me on my lip ?
If 1 is correct, would he extract genital herpes from my cold sore from the oral sex ?
If 2 is correct, I am obtaining from performing oral sex until it goes away. Should I also obstain from intercourse until he gets tested for herpes ? (We never use protection other than my birth control pill– we are in a committed relationship).
OR am I just paranoid because of the combination of performing a lot of oral sex in a short period of time and getting a cold sore ?

Ive been sleeping with a new guy for a few months now and i noticed he had some red bumps on his buttocks and upper thigh. We used protection but the condoms have broke numerous times. I recently got tested and found out i have the anti-bodies for hsv-2. Im sure i got it from him, even though he claims he never knew and never had symptoms. My question is: ive only given him oral twice and used a condom both times, but now that i have the virus (or just the antibodies?) is it safe to give him oral without a condom?

  50. Veronica 9 years ago

I just found out I had herpes 1 and i have two bumps underneath my bottom lip I also had a fever and my throat hurt which is some of the symptoms I have read about. I went to my doctor and she prescribed me medicine but I read that the virus will still be in my body forever. If my fever blister or cold sore or herpe however I should put it goes away which is suppose too and I kiss someone will they automatically be infected with the virus and have herpes too? Will they get the blister and symptoms as well? Does this mean because I got this I can never kiss anyone again? I read that kissing someone on the mouth who has herpes sores on the mouth can infect someone but what if u don’t have the sores anymore.

    • Rad 9 years ago

Louis – get tested and find out your status, if you are positve of hsv1 and negative hsv2, your partner needs to be tested also..

If you are both hsv1 positve, then you both have antibodies, the mens you cannot re-infect each other again… Just be sure he is negative on other type as well.

And true anxiety could get your mind going, you both get tested to be sure.

Sam – something like the answer above, he got to get tested to see if hes positve; where did you get hsv2 on mouth or genitals, if its on mouth, its very rare that you have outbreaks with hsv2.. Just be safe and get him tested to see if he has other types..

Verónica- honey relax, almost 80% of US has cold sores, this is more frequently passed through are families while we are young… Hell even Celine Dions has Cold Sores, Kim Kardashian, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Michael Jordan, and list gors on and on and on…. Trick is to not get so much sun, bacause it triggers the outbreak.. If going to beach where lip balmp and lots lf sun blcok..

Find out if some foods trigger this; and finally dont kids while you have an outbreak, chances are very low that you pass this virus when you dont have an outbreak!
Relax this is soooooo common, just relax and you will be fine, go have fun and enjoy life!!

I had sex with two people unprotected and the person I think gave it to me was my ex. I haven’t told him . I just told him not to talk to me. The day before or the same night I took a shower and I put powder on my body I thought that it was just the powder that went inside my vagina so I didn’t worry that much about it. I wasn’t feeling well, so I went to the hospital. I was having a lot of discharge that looked like yeast. So, that’s what my doctor said that it was he ran a pregnancy and STD Test to see if anything was wrong. It a WAIT. So, I was very concerned. I called my doctor and asked him if the test came back he said yes. So, he told me I had an antibacterial and gave me meds. The next day I had sex with my sex partner. When we were having sex I felt a BURNING sensation. He told me he came in me. I ran and got up because it was burning soooo bad so I went to the bathroom and tried to wash it out. Every time I use the bathroom it burned even before that. So, the next day I was in pain and going crazy. I called and made a appointment and they looked at my vagina and said that it might be herpes. It took 3 doctors to find out by the look. My period hasn’t come on yet and I haven’t had sex after I knew I had herpes. Is the period thing normal?

    • Rad 9 years ago

Hi, did you got tested by swab or blood test to see in fact it is Herpes?

Yes doctors know how ir looks like but you have to be sure it is in fact hsv.

      Period and herps are different!!
      Get pregnancy test also!!

My husband and I both had an outbreak of type 1 herpes (below the belt) I have heard that if we both have the same type we can’t reinfect each other… And I have also heard that each strain only attaches to one part of your body. My question is the risk of us getting it orally from one another…

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Hello littlemis,
Well if you both have antibodies well built, meaning for a period of time.. Its very unlikely that you could re-infect this to another person if he or she has this antibodies fighting this virus.

I’m confused and feel like I have no where to turn, so I tested positive for HSV 1 genitally..
This has been going on for almost a month of me getting red bumps, some get white in them some don’t. They don’t hurt, itch, burst, crust, or scab??? I mean I don’t get it they go away and for every one that goes away I get a new one? So like I was pumped each time like 5 went away but then the next day I check and there’s 5 new ones in new places. Is this normal? I don’t have money to go to a follow up appt and the nurses are stupid as shit and can’t answer my questions. I mean I thank got they are painless and aren’t busting and scabbing but it’s starting to emotionally get to me like when are they going to stop? Why do I keep getting more everyday while the old ones are healing everyday?

  54. Dex 9 years ago

    Hi B!

Is this the first time you have noticed the red bumps? If so, this may be your initial outbreak and those are usually the worst. Symptoms can vary greatly, in different individuals. Symptoms can vary from no symptoms at all to being painful with blister types of appearance. Genital HSV1 is also typically less painful than HSV2 with a lower recurrence of outbreaks.

Unfortunately, there are many members of the medical profession who really don’t know much about herpes and some may even give bad advice.

It is important to realize that when the red bumps eventually go away, you can still spread HSV1 to your partner. Over time, the outbreaks will probably lessen as your body builds up resistance to them.

All that being said, I would call the place you visited and ask for a prescription if they don’t start to heal in a week or two. Acyclovir works for many and is cheaper than Valtrex. There is really nothing more they can do so save your money for something fun.

  55. B 9 years ago

    Hi!
Thank you for replying so fast.
And yes this is the first time I’ve ever noticed bumps down there.
It just blows my mind because they don’t have any symptoms of what I’ve read about on about 30 websites 🙁
Like I can wipe normally and touch them with 0 pain or discomfort.
I’m just kinda iffy because this wasn’t even a dr I went to buy a nurse practitioner..and I’ve also never seen her before.

I don’t think I mentioned this but I feel like I’ve always known I’ve had HSV 1 because as I child I remember getting cold sores
But I think I’ve read online that if you get cold sores isn’t the virus supposed to stay there instead of moving down there?
    I haven’t had a cold sore probably since I was around 10 and I’m 23 now

My biggest concern with this is that for 3 miserable weeks I keep getting more and more bumps. Shouldn’t they be stopping by now? It’s just more of a frustration that they won’t just stop and go away. Is there anyone over the counter to get?
I hate dealing with this dr office I called for over a week to get my results back and no one ever called me back I had to go down to the lab place and get a paper myself…
Don’t feel like waiting another week to try to get medicine to help 🙁

    • Dex 9 years ago

Yes, that is a reason why herpes is so easily spread. The symptoms can be so slight that many people simply do not realize that they are infected. I know a few people who gave it to their partner without even realizing they were infected. HSV1 is much more common than HSV2 but one or the other can reside in the genital region. Unless you contracted HSV1 orally and genitally at the same time, it would be extremely rare to get it in both places since your body builds antibodies to the virus. I don’t think there are any cases of that happening but I could be wrong. Now, it is possible to have HSV1 orally and HSV2 genitally. They just don’t live in the same place.

As far as the information or pictures that you come across on the internet, those are probably “Worst case” scenarios. We wrote a blog about this subject HERE. One of the worst things about having herpes is telling a potential partner about it. The first thing they do is Google “Herpes pictures” and see the worst of the worst.

Eventually, the outbreak will disappear. Like I mentioned, the first outbreak is usually the worst and lasts the longest. It just has to run its course.

      I hope this helps!

I can’t thank you enough for the answers I’ve been sitting here going out of my mind feeling alone!

So what you’re saying is if when I was little and got the cold sores on my lip it’d be odd for it to manifest genitally too?
I got blood tested for type 1 and 2 and thank god 2 was negative so I most definitely know it’s not both!

Also I did call my regular gynecologist because she’s always booked up to a month and I can’t get in soon and she just called in some vaginal insert for bacterial vaginitis or whatever and I’ve done 2 nights with that now hoping that it would somehow help hoping I was misdiagnosed..
And it did clear all the big bumps but I’m still getting really small red ones that are very minor

  57. B 9 years ago

I heard this also, if by chance this is actually a type 2 breakout would it have not yet shown up in the blood test? Like would it have been too early to detect if it was just sitting around in my body without any break outs?

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Hi B,
Well the antibodies take time to develop, it actually can take up to 6-12 weeks to show on a IGG Blood Test. On a IGM blood test, it will actually show if its a recent infection, but its not so accurate.

If you suspect this is HSV the best bet to know what type is it; is to swab test… If you have blister right now is just a simple swab with a look a like QTip, you swab blister with liquid and they will test.

This is by far the best test.

Dex was right in all of his answers.
You will be fine, just find out what could this be; so you could take precautions!

If you need anything let us know!

Hi, i want to ask some questions and i am sorry for my English is not good.

If the giver of the oral sex had cracked lips with a little bit of blood, and then she had the cold sore in the same area after 10 hours. Is there a high opportunity that the receiver of the oral sex infected Genital hsv1 if he was negative hsv1? (he had fever after 1 week of oral sex, he don’t have any symptoms until now, he had the blood test after 7 weeks and the result was positive hsv1)

“The chances are almost 0 to get infected with the same virus in other part of the body”. Is there any study to support this? Some doctors don’t agree because they think the antibody cannot prevent the recurrence, so how can it prevent the reinfection of same type?

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Blue,
The thing is that, if the receiver is positive hsv1, it could be that he got this orally also, this is if you kissed obviously.

Fact and years of experience, says that antibodies are in your body to fight this virus..

Just like chickenpox, thats why once you get this, chances are almost 0 you will get this again.

So first you have to confirm that the Hsv is in fact in genitals. If receiver was a man is Most likely on lips, because its more fragile the skin on lips then on genital on man.
      ——–

K, it could be either way!!
If he just got infected with withlow, and he holded hos penis with that had theres a big possibility that he re-infected himself..

But both blisters, penis and Withlow must be swab tested.

Dont want to sound like the bad guy or blame your fiance, but withlow is something no so common, and its almost a second infection, meaning that person with withlow was infact, infected before in another region. This is in most cases, not necessary your case.

Apart from that the symptoms you describe on genitals sounds very particulary to be Herpes.

Its very important to test both areas by a swab, so you could identify the virus and try to start controlling this.

Herpes dont defines who you are!
You will always be you and will be healthy like always!

      Good Luck

My fiance got a cardboard cut on his middle finger and it got infected with herpes. recently, he had four bumps on his penis with black dots in center, when those went away, there was blister like bumps under the tip of his head. My question is, can herpes spread to his penis, just from him holding his penis to pee?

I was just diagnosed with HSV type 1 on my genitals.. I had never had an out break before until recently.. My boyfriend got tested and he tested negative.. What I’m worried about is since I hadn’t had any symptoms or signs before and we had been having unprotected sex for 3 months, oral and intercourse could it be possible that I can develope cold sores on my mouth? I’ve never had a cold sore.. He is telling me that I can still give him oral and that since I already have it on my genitals it show up in both places.. Is this true? Genital herpes are bad enough without taking the chance of getting it on my mouth to.

  61. Blue 9 years ago

Thank you for your response and i want to ask more questions.

    1. The receiver(a male) don’t have the symptoms in genital area, and he can’t remember he have cold sores or not. How can i know his HSV infected in where? As he had fever and tonsillitis after 1 week, the time frame seems match the primary infection symptoms.

    2. Somebody say the primary infection of HSV1 in genital area always(or often) have symptoms, is that true?

    3. Last question is, false positive in HSV2 happen if folks have high value of HSV1? Will the igg value increase if folks reinfection same HSV type?

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Blue:

—— Fever could be a symptom, tonsilitis doubt it.. Only way is to test.. and Blood Test you must wait at least 6-10 weeks to be sure…
or Swab The Blister for accurate results.

—– False Positve happens in all types.. Test Look for antibodies, 1 type will not affect the result. IGG Will most Likely be High at first.. Results will vary !!

I believe I am an asymptomatic hsv1 patient who infected my husband. Ive never noticed an outbreak. We have been married 31 years. His initial outbreak was before we were married. There have been a handful in 31 years. He now has an outbreak on his buttocks and they are typically on his genitals. I’m wondering if I need to avoid his outbreak.

    • Dex 9 years ago

      Hi Allison!

Without knowing more, it is always advisable to avoid touching an active outbreak on your partner. Now, if you passed your HSV1 to his genital area and are asking if you can be re-infected in another area, then the answer is no, according to Johns Hopkins.

      • Rad 9 years ago

Hello, For your peace of mind, i suggest you both get tested for both types.. This way you will know for sure where you stand!!
        Outbreaks on buttocks are normal!!

I’m really concerned I may have gotten hsv 1 or 2. The person I was with told me they were tested 3 months ago and Neg for everything but I am very nervous. Can you please tell me what you think of my symptoms. Last Tuesday I preformed oral sex and penetration with a condom. So that was four days ago. It’s getting close to the 5th day at the moment I am writing this. I have an itching on my face around the corner of my mouth that I attributed to an angular chealitis that showed up the next day. In the last 4 days I have also noticed a tickling on my nerves on my chin and on the top left of my lip that feels like a creepy crawly worm passing by through my nerve endings. I’ve been reading a lot about prodromes and thought this is what it was. Can someone please share their personal experience of the 1st time they saw their symptoms. How soon did you notice something? I keep reading 2-7 days. We’re there prodromes? Can you please describe the prodromes on that 1st symptom? Do the bumps show up slowly or do they just appear overnight on your lip? If I push up my tongue against my lip I can see two tiny white dots on the lip, is this the beggining of a growth? When you think you have something you can trick yourself into believing anything. But I am very nervous and scared. I’ve been having panic attacks and been unable to look in the mirror because I can’t stop thinking about it. That’s how I found this website. I’ve been reading as much as I can find, but there’s not many stories on the questions I had above. Thanks!

I contracted type 1 from my partner on my genitals after oral sex. My question is- will I now have outbreaks on my genitals going forward since this is where I contracted it? Or will my outbreaks be oral since it is type 1?

    • Rad 9 years ago

      Hi Lisa,
Your outbreak will be where you contracted, so if your partner was type 1 orally, and he performed oral sex on you and you contracted like this, you will have type 1 on gens.

As you may know type 1 in gens; tend to be milder than type2 and outbreaks are more far apart.

This sounds ridiculous but, my son was just diagnosed with hsv1 blood typing. He never had them as a child. Is it possible being he has had shingles twice and very bad chicken pox that the hsv is positive because of the zoster or is he a carrier?

  70. Dex 9 years ago

    Hi!
    I have hsv1 genitally … And I have a few questions..
One … I’ve had this for several years now and I am planning to have a family soon. I was wondering if pregnancy always leads to an outbreak? Like I know it can be a trigger … But most stories I’ve read women always seemed to have an outbreak when pregnant? Is this true for every woman?

    • Dex 9 years ago

      Hi Lookingtothefuture!

While I don’t have any experience with this particular issue, it has come up many times on our forums. The answer seems to be that it all depends on the person. Many women explained that they had several kids each, all with natural birth, no issues and no outbreaks. Stress, in general, can cause an outbreak so giving birth definitely could fall under that category. Here is a great article about herpes during pregnancy. I hope this helps!

  74. Dex 9 years ago

    Hi Jordon!

Unfortunately, the answer is “Yes.” Even though you have not had any symptoms, the virus is still with you. This also goes for those who are asymptomatic..those who do not show symptoms. There can still be viral shedding when everything looks and feels normal.

  77. Rad 9 years ago

    Wondering,
I assume that this was the first outbreak and you are recently diagnosed!
Fact is that initial outbreaks sometimes can come back in weeks even days after the first outbreak.
Valtrex is a good suppressive therapy med for this; and actually type 1 on gens for most of the people is milder and have less outbreaks.
At first body is trying to adjust creating a tibodies to fight each outbreak; so because its adjusting and you probably are in stress, maybe little deppression and anxious, this HSV takes advantage of your low defenses of your body and reocurrs!
Dot worry my friend, you will be ok; try valtrex next OB as soon as you feel its going to blow and soon after you feel is gone stop taking them. Also monitor your outbreaks and see what trigger it the most; maybe things you eat, or other activities for example.
This is as normal as a cold, you will get through this easy and maybe without any meds!
If you need anything let us know!
    God Bless

Actually that wasn’t my first outbreak … I’ve had this for years. So I was kinda surprised when I tried taking the remaining medicine, it wasn’t working. Is it possible that hsv1 won’t react to any type of antiviral. I haven’t been on therapy of any kind.

I was diagnosed with HSV 1 in my genital area last week. I had had no prior symptoms of HSV 1. I recently started dating and had oral sex and sex 3 days prior to my first breakout in my genitals. Is it likely that my partner had HSV 1 and spread it to me when he was giving me oral sex? Or is it likely that I had this and it was dormant and decided to make its appearance in my genitals instead of on the face like it typically does?

    • Dex 9 years ago

      Hi So Confused!

Without knowing more, that is a tough one to answer. If you only had HSV1 orally, your body would produce antibodies and prevent you from getting it genitally later on. It is technically possible to have HSV1, both orally and genital, if you were exposed in those places at the same time.

Hi! My partner and I had sex a few times the other day and by the next day he got a cold sore on his lip. He said it is herpes and that he got it from me when he performed oral. However, we still kissed with his sore lip but I am fine, i don’t get sore lip like he does. What does this mean?

    • Dex 9 years ago

      Hi Jen!

Well, that could mean a lot of things. You could have HSV1 genitally (Or oral) and passed it on to him. If you have HSV1 genitally, your body built up antibodies so the odds you would get it on your lip would be extremely low. It could also mean that he already had HSV1 (Oral) and cold sore appeared from the friction of kissing or oral sex. If you both already had oral HSV1, it wouldn’t be passed to your genitals because of your antibodies. If you have ever had a cold sore, that is HSV1.

Hi, I just have a simple question.
I found out in February that I had genital herpes type 1. I was very disappointed and upset. I had one outbreak in feburary and that was about it. In June though I had a cold sore on lip, I was rather confused because if I have cold sores on my lips than why did I have an outbreak down below if I already had hvs1? Kinda confusing. I haven’t had any OB on my genitals since feburary

If I have an outbreak of sacral herpes on my lower back and not in genital area can i still give the disease to my partner if we have traditional sexual intercourse. Not touching the infected area.

  83. Sillybrain 9 years ago

    Hello,
I am still in shock of my hsv1 diagnosis after having a long standing childhood oral coldsore infection.
I was told by a experts in the field that I was immune to contracting hsv1 genitally because of my oral infection. I had a positive swab of a nick on my perineum which popped up 3.5 weeks after oral sex from my partner (noticed he had a cold sore in his beard a week after the oral sex so he either didn’t have one or just the beginning of one at the time of the oral sex). Nothing of this was typical of herpes as the sore didn’t hurt, wasn’t tender or that itchy (temporary itch) and went away in under a week. I’ve heard false positives do occur but not often.
My question is, we had unprotected sex while the sore was there, can my partner contract it genitally now too? I know the odds are low but given I contracted it genitally after having coldsores, what’s to say he can’t get it genitally too despite having coldsores? I have a hard time believing the so called experts now.
    Thanks.

    • Dex 8 years ago

      Hi Sillybrain!

Well, having HSV1 orally, usually keeps you from getting it genitally due to your body’s antibodies. Depending on the herpes test, it can take a while for the results to be accurate as they are testing for the antibodies. Has he been tested for both HSV1 and HSV2?

  84. Sad mom 8 years ago

My daughter was recently diagnosed with hsv 1 genitally. I AM just as sad and stressed as she is. She got if from a guy she was dating. My question is can she no longer kiss me, share food or drinks with me, or use my make up brushes, or lipsticks like mother and daughters do? What are the risk of her passing this to me or her sister? I don’t want to hurt her feelings in any way as this is my child. She is only 19! This is really a tough time for us.

    • Rad 8 years ago

      Hi Mom,
If its Genitally well its Genitally!

There’s no way she could get this to you!

If its on lips also, well just don’t kissing while she has a blister is the only way.

There hasn’t been enough evidence that this virus lives much out of its environment that said; if its on a glass or other things like forks it should not be a problem.

Lipstick and other makeup things are very sanitary; so even if she doesn’t have this, its good you dont share.

Even if she has it orally its very very common!! Even Celine Dion has this!

Mom, I understand completely and believe me she will be fine; also you and other daughter will be fine!

Just support her when she feels down; she will get the hang of it and it will be better!

type 1 on gen tends to be milder and with less recurrences!

some even don’t have recurrences for years and years!

If you need anything just ask!
      Take care and god bless

    • Dex 8 years ago

      Hi Sad Mom!

As usual, Rad is spot on. The herpes virus quickly dies once it is outside of the body and exposed to air. Estimates are that somewhere between 80-90% of adults in the US have already been exposed to HSV1, orally. As we age, our immune system suppresses it. Otherwise, there would be a lot more people walking around with cold sores. Of course, you should avoid kissing anybody with an active cold sore or if they feel one coming on. Go on doing the same mother and daughter things that you have been doing.

  85. britta 8 years ago

My friend was diagnosed with genital herpes and was wondering if she still engages in oral sex can it be past to her partner if she gives him head? She is embarrassed to ask but still wants to be able to please her man

  86. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Britta!

Since HSV2 (Genital herpes) does not like living in the oral (Mouth) region, the odds are extremely low that she can pass it to her boyfriend via oral sex. When we say “extremely low” we mean that the general theory is that would fall between almost all to 100% of all HSV2 is found in the genital region. Now, add in that up to 90% of the population has been exposed to HSV1, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, those antibodies would would also help prevent the HSV2 from being in the mouth.

    I hope this helps!

  87. James 8 years ago

So i have had type one for years and usually get a cold sore one every 2 years. Around a month ago i was giving oral to my girlfriend and a day later got a weird cold sore. About 4 days later she acted funny and didnt want to have sex. Come to find out she was treated for std’s at a local clinic and did in fact bring back valtrex, a herpes medication. She has since been diagnosed with type 1 but on the genitals.
My concern is though i hadit is it possible that during her vaginal outbreak could she have given me the cold sore though i have type 1? When i got tested 3 days ago the lab said my type 1 antibodies are inactive. So i am thinking she made me have my oral outbreak due to oral sex while she was having vaginal symptoms? It also makes me nervous cayse she lied to me about her infection and has been hanging with a bisexual man/friend and we have been going through issues with her trust/possible unfaithfulness on her part because she is addicted to speed and while using it very hypersexual.
I guess what im wondering is it possible she cheated, past her genital infection/outbreak on to me though i prior had type 1 but was inactive for an outbreak?
I am also aware that i could have sliently passed on my type 1 to her and given her a vaginal infection through oral sex but if my results said my antibodies were inactive doesnt that mean i got my oral outbreak due to her active genital infection? Please help

    • Rad 8 years ago

      James,
There is no way to know if you or her where the first to have this. Although lab test says that when you are positive in IGM and Negative on IGG means is a recent infection, but drs. don’t trust the IGM Test much.

That said, you could have easily passed this to her years ago, months ago, even that time you are recalling.

Many times the blister is not out yet but you in fact shedding this virus, so yes you could have infected her!

Answer to your other question, if you’ve have this type 1 for years, you already have the antibodies in your system, so you could not be reinfected!

What can cause the outbreak? Well the grinding on the mouth could lacerate something very small that could very easily made the outbreak!

The fact she had OB 4 days later could be the answer that you got her infected! But looking it from the other side; from the grinding you could easily lacerate her genital and make hher had an OB if she have had this before your encounter.

Difficult to know, trust is what you need right now and that is the only and biggest thing right now!

      Just a thought!!
If this is is her first outbreak i think she will had come to you and blame you; so if she has had this for long time or have has sex with others and can blame everyone, well you know the rest!

Find peace in your heart and find your happiness!

      God Bless

Hi so a few months ago I got a horrible itch and then came sores on my vagina I went to the ER and they said it was a UTI. A couple of days later I got this disgusting looking pile of bumps in the creases of my thighs that later looked like a rash along with an inflamed vagina. I also had a lot of pain in that area and I went to my Dr. the Dr on call that day said it was herpes, that devastated me. I cried and panicked how did I get this, when did I get this, did I pass it to my kids,my husband what am I going to tell him? So my Dr is called in ,takes a look and sayes its not because there were no apparent legions. I just went for my scheduled Dr appt a few days ago and doc asked me how I was doing with that issue I said oh fine it went away with the meds u gave me. Then he said that he didn’t say that I didn’t have it. So two days ago something appeared on my butt well inside that area I got a mirror and it looks like a fever blister, I DO have it huh ?

    • Rad 8 years ago

      Nervous i understand you!
      Ashamed, dont be!!!

Last sentence made me giggle, no offense, but i think you above all this you have humor!!

Well let me tell you a couple of things:

1st – Many times the first outbreak can reocurr right after it goes Away, this because your body is building antibodies to fight This virus and its adjusting!

2nd – the only way to know is to test blood by igg and igm test. And if you have blister easy bedt eay to test and more reliable is Swab it! And it will tell you what type etc!

3rd – when you are nervous and anxious everything i mean everything will get you thinking its Herpes… Even if you scratch your nose and see a red bump of a blister.

What to tell your husband??? Well depends on how many years you have been together; if you have been fairhfull throughout the years and if he has been faithful.. So its better to talk it over!

You will be fine, just go swab the blister or take blood test igm and igg..

God bless and dont be ashamed!
      You are still and angel!

    Hi there,
I have a question and i hope to keep it simple.
I have oral herpes and i get it in my gum and sometimes it causes me throat pains. Thats it, my initial break out was horrible I couldnt eat for a week a half.
So, I met this guy and we hit it off and I learned that he too has oral herpes and he gets the traditional cold sore on his upper lip. I want to know if his break out spot can be transferred to my lips even if i already have the virus in another spot inside my mouth. I’m worried that this has already occured and I’m just waiting to see if I get an outbreak there or not. I’d like your opinion on the matter if you’d be so kind.
    Thanks a lot!
    Jenn

  90. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Jenn!

It’s not likely. If you have had oral herpes (HSV1) for a while, then your body would have already produced the antibodies and should prevent you from getting it in other areas. While the odds are very low, you should still avoid kissing when either of you have an active cold sore. The good news is that your outbreaks will subside over time and may even stop. The vast majority of people have been exposed to HSV1 already and it isn’t that common to see someone with a cold sore.

    I hope this helps!

  91. ruby 8 years ago

    Hello,

I just found out lastnight that I most likely have hsv2. I also have hsv1, but only had one coldsore which occurred 4.5 years ago. My hope is that my hsv2 will be like my hsv1 in that it has a low re-occurrence rate. What do you think?

  92. Shania Jones 8 years ago

I was recently diagnosed with HSV and I’ve had a couple of outbreaks. I contracted from the guy I’m currently in a relationship with. He has the strand but never had any outbreaks. I have two questions 1. Is it possible for me to be the only one having outbreaks being that I contracted it from him. 2. Is it normal for my outbreaks to get worst than the first?

  93. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Ruby!

It is hard to say. Have you had a HSV2 outbreak already or recently had sex with someone who has HSV2? Many people don’t even realize they have herpes because they don’t show any symptoms or they are just that slight. It is the initial outbreak that is usually the worst.

  94. Dex 8 years ago

    Hello Shania!

The answer to your first question is yes. As I mentioned above, some people do not show any symptoms or are barely noticeable. If you are asking if he has a less aggressive form of herpes then that answer is no. The virus is the same but individuals will react differently.

Is it normal for my outbreaks to get worst than the first? Well, there really isn’t a set rule but the initial outbreak is typically the worst because your body does not have any antiviruses against HSV2. Again, that will vary with every individual.

Our members also have said their experiences have differed. While some said the initial outbreak was the worst, others have said the initial was not nearly as bad as the second or even third. Over time, the intensity and occurrence of the outbreaks should lessen.

While I am on the subject or outbreak occurrences, many members say they only have them once a year to some that have not had one in 5 years. It all depends. What seems to be the main culprit of an outbreak is stress with diet coming in a distant second.

  95. mercedez 8 years ago

Question; I had a sore on my inner labia and it kept getting more irritated and a few days later I had what felt like strep throat too. But it was only on my left side. I went to the Dr and they tested me for herpes and I got the results back and they said I had it. But I’m curious as to which one, or how that works. It seems as if they didn’t give me a straight answer and I want to call them again actually. But the guy I had sex with (and of course did oral too) said that he has had fever blisters his whole life. So I’m just confused as to if it’s hsv1 or hsv2? If it’s 1 it’s not as bad as 2, if it’s 2 its, I think, worse than 1. How can I know/tell which one it is? Call the Dr again?

  96. stave 8 years ago

If I have herpes simplex 1 can I still (Receive oral sex) without infecting someone? I had a outbreak on my penis months ago it healed up now I just need to know.

  97. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Mercedez!

Did they tell you what type (HSV1 or HSV2) it was? There are tests that will tell you the type you have so give your doctor a call. Either one will still be able to be passed to a partner. HSV1 tends to be more mild when in the genital area but not always. As far as your sore throat, many people do get flu like symptoms during an outbreak.

  98. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Stave!

If you have HSV1 on your genitals then you can still pass the virus to your partner through regular sex AND oral sex. Just because there is not a visible outbreak, you can still pass it to your partner due to viral shedding.

  99. SG 8 years ago

I’m confused, scared and worked up beyond belief. I really need some help and information. For the best couple of weeks I have had uti type symptoms and also yeast infection type symptoms. Well I finally decided to see a doctor yesterday because the pain was increasing to where I felt nauseous and it hurt to sit, stand, pee or anything. The doctor found white bumps in my vaginal area so I’ve been test for herpes 1 and 2 and still waiting on results. But here is the thing, I’m a lesbian. I have never been with a guy before and neither have any of my past partners or my girlfriend now so there is no way possible I have herpes 2, am I right? My girlfriend now does of a history of cold sores but says she hasn’t had one in a while is it still possible for her to have passed herpes 1 to me? And if so we had intercourse when I didn’t know herpes was a possibility. So could I have infected her genitaly if she already has orally? Please help.

  100. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi SG!

Both herpes 1 and 2 are spread via skin to skin contact. So, if one of you has HSV2 and had genital on genital contact then it would be possible to spread herpes from one to the other. If she has had cold sores in the past, she has HSV1. While most people have oral herpes and it usually goes into a dormant state after a while, the virus is still in the body and can resurface at any time.

An active cold sore is not always necessary to spread the virus. Another reason HSV1 is so common is that sometimes the person does not realize they even have an active cold sore because the symptoms are so minor.

If she already has had HSV1 (Cold sores) for a while then her body would normally produce antibodies and keep her from also getting it in her genital area. It would be possible to have HSV1 orally and genitally if one was exposed around the same time since it can take a few weeks for the body to produce antibodies.

Since the body does need time to produce antibodies, it is also possible that your test results may show up negative. Many tests use these antibodies to determine if you have the herpes virus. So, your doctor may recommend a second test after a few weeks.

    I hope this helps!

    • SG 8 years ago

But if neither of us have ever had contact with a male or anyone that does have HSV 2 it is impossible for me to have that correct? It is more likely for me to have HSV 1 since she does have a history of cold sores, am I right? And if so, what does this change if anything? Will I be able to have a normal sex life or normal life in general?

  101. Bora 8 years ago

I have had cold sores since I was little. Sometimes I get up to 5 outbreaks a year, very painful and lasts about a week. When I was little I did not know those were cold sores so I used to share drinks and kiss my younger siblings while I had visible sores on my lips. No one in my family’s ever had a cold sore. I used to kiss my ex on the mouth while I had visible sores and for seven years we were together he did not have outbreaks. Every time I get tested for STDs always comes back negative. I am confused. If I get cold sores, I am most likely hsv 1 positive? Cold sore = herpes, am I wrong?

  102. Jimmy Neutron 8 years ago

Hello I am wondering if HSV-1 is something I should tell my spouse about once I get married. I shared a drink with a relative and four days later a small cut appeared on the inside of my lip. I am not sure if it is HSV-1 or just a blister. No itchiness or swelling, my throat was a little scratchy but that’s it.

    • Rad 8 years ago

      Jimmy,
Well yes, BUT inside of mouth could more likely be a canker sore.
Sharing drink will not pass virus; there hasnt been any study that proves this, because virus doesnt stay alive in the open.

But you can share your concern, and let her help you on this; this actually will let her know your honest and concern; but dont talk about Herpes, just ask her about it and tell her you have a blister.

But i think it will be cankers!

Either way, oral H, type 1 is so common almost 80% of the people in US has it, even Celine Dion!

So it’s not shocking at all, stigma is the thing that was created years ago, but the fact is that HSV WONT kill you and wont do anything to harm you.. Its just like a normal cold, headache that you will have for the rest of your life, comes and goes!

      Best Regards

  103. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi SG!

That is correct. If you or your partner have never come into contact with someone with HSV2 then you cannot have it. As far as having a normal sex life, the possibilities are endless. You will, however, need to tell any future partners that you have HSV1 and that they have a chance of also getting it. Yes, that part can suck but you have to give them the choice. In reality, most people already have HSV1 so you can’t give it to them again but be upfront and tell them. It would be unfair to put them through what you are going through now.

  104. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Bora!

Cold sores are herpes. As Rad mentioned above, canker sores are different and can be triggered by stress and are not contagious. Canker sores tend to be on the inside of the mouth where cold sores go can be inside and out. Have you had a specific test for herpes? Usually, a STD test does not test for herpes.

  105. Diana 8 years ago

Yes. You have acquired, most liekly, HSV, type 2. Common, and your outbreak is evidence.Commonly an outbreak will show on the genitals within a month of infection, however some people can go well over a year without any signs and be infected with the herpes simplex virus, in this case, type 2.Only difference here with type, is type 1 is the herpes virus that is more commonly known as cold sores’ while this can be sexually transmitted, it does not effect the genitals. So, yes you could have contracted this virus from your previous boyfriend, this boyfriend, or one a long time ago .. depending on your sexual activity. It can be controlled quite well,.. you should be fine with treatment.

  106. Anonymous 8 years ago

I went in to get tested for all STI’s and did a blood test for herpes, because an ex that I slept with about a 5 weeks ago suggested I do so but would not tell me why!! The results came back as HSV 1 IGG positive (7.73) and HSV 2 IGG Negative (less than 0.91) So I am wondering if there is now a test that I can get to find out for sure if the HSV 1 is genital or oral? I have never had a cold sore that I can think of, unless I am mistaking the “pimples” near my lips as cold sores. I have also never had any sores on or around my “lady parts” so I am very confused as how I can be positive for it. My biggest concern though is figuring out if I have HSV 1 oral or genital?? Have I just always had HSV 1 or did this come from him? I’m so lost and my doctor has yet to return my calls, I simply saw the results online and it’s been 3 days!! Help 🙁

I’ve had genital herpes for over 10 years now. I get a few outbreaks a year. I recently tested positive for HPV 16 and have to have a Colposcopy tomorrow but just got an outbreak today. I’m concerned they won’t do the Colposcopy because of my outbreak but don’t want to put off the Colposcopy because I’m so stressed out about it. Will my outbreak cause problems during a Colposcopy?

I was diagnosed with HSV1 about a year ago. The first and only ever outbreak was horrible! I was prescribed meds to surpress the virus and am supposed to use them if j feel one coming on. I have not had to use those pills since I had the original outbreak. I don’t ever shows sings of having an outbreak. Is it common for someone to pass it without having any symptoms of an outbreak with hsv1 below the belt? My dr. Told me I could possible live the rest of my life without another one ever. Is this true? I sure hope it is because like i said the original one I had was just awful!

  109. Dex 8 years ago

    Hello Anonymous!

It is not uncommon for people with HSV1 or HSV2 to go years without another outbreak. The first outbreak is usually the worst. While the chance transmission is greatly increased with an active breakout, there is still a chance to pass it even with no visible symptoms.

I tested positive for HSV-2 on my arm. Does that mean I have it in my genital area also?

  113. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Nicole!

Well, to be honest, I have never heard of HSV2 on the arm so I am at a loss. In theory, I would think not. Just like if you had HSV1 orally, you won’t pass it to your partner through sex, genitally. Sorry, I couldn’t be more help.

    • Rad 8 years ago

      Hi Nicole,
Most of the people that have HSV, had an exposure time frame where they could had been infected on a couple of parts of the body.

Just like many got infected orally and genital on the same exposure!

Just to clarify its rare but happens!

Just like H Whitlow, on fingers; it could also transfer to arms!!

Oral and gens are more vulnerable because of the soft and sensitive area on skin! Whitlow, because of openings on finger tips, and maybe on your case razor or cuts that could have been exposed!

Answering your questions, there is no way to know other than having an outbreak!

I have friends with H in hands and other on chest!! Rare yes! Impossible to have no!

Don’t worry, this types of areas tend to be more tough for outbreaks, so maybe it wont bother you much!

      Hope its more clear now!

Don’t worry to much its going to be ok!
      God Bless

Hello support team! So this past tuesday i was diagnosed with type 1 herpes on my genitalia. It is new, my blood tests were negative and my swab of the sore was what came back positive. Although the initial BO is over i am left struggling with accepting this. My gyno has no answers for my questions left unanswered, which in turn makes things all the more frustrating. So if anyone can help id be grateful.
    1. Since i had my outbreak on my genitals does that mean i probably dont have it around my mouth? How does that work? I know generally with type 1 you get it a short period of time after coming in contact but could it be dormant orally?
    2. How often is it normal to shed? Ive heard alot of conflicting info online
    3. I have insurence that will cover the antiviral pill, which i am taking. But what is your stance on the vitiman supplements such as olive leaf extract?
    4. Recently started talking to someone knew. I would hate for anyone to get this from me being naive so there is no doubt i plan on telling him before sex. But should i tell him pre first kiss? Like i said ive never had a oral breakout considering i just contacted this i dont know how it all works.
…im sorry if i sound stupid. But i feel like it is better to look stupid and know than go without knowing. Im very insecure about this whole thing. I want to know everything so i can answer any questions anyone else might have.
    Thank you!!

So I currently have an outbreak in my nose but not in my mouth… However, I’m becoming paranoid because some of my saliva was transferred to my own genitals during intercourse/foreplay and then I read that even if you don’t have an active sore in your mouth, it could spread. I am wondering if just because I have an outbreak period right now.. could I have transferred it to my genitalia? Please let me know as soon as you can! I am stressed about it. 🙂 Thank you!

  116. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Lila!

It is possible if this was your first outbreak and your body didn’t have enough time to produce antibodies. That could take a few months. I apologize for taking so long to respond, we had a spam problem that we fixed and your comment got lost in the shuffle.

  117. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Carissa!

Sorry for responding so late! It is possible that the blood test came back negative because it can take 3-4 months for your body to produce the HSV antibodies. The blood test actually tests for the antibodies.

It is possible to have HSV1 both orally and genitally if you were infected around the same time as your body hasn’t produced any antibodies yet. Most people already have HSV1 orally and it lays dormant most of the time.

Shedding can occur at any time. Being on an antiviral and not having an active outbreak greatly reduces the chances but it is not 100%.

As far as taking vitamin supplements or even antiviral pills for the symptoms, people seem to be all over the board on this. It is different for everybody so there is nothing wrong with experimenting. If you can, I would recommend not taking anything as your body eventually fights it on its own. I know people who have been taking antivirals for years and get one heck of an outbreak when they get off. I also know many people who have not had an outbreak in more than 5 years.

As far as the new guy goes, since you do have HSV1 in your genitals he can also get it. HSV1 is generally more mild than HSV2 and it may appear to go away but you can still spread it.

Also, no question is stupid! That’s what we are here for. There is so much misinformation out there that we want to help!

  118. Frustrated 8 years ago

I have had hsv1 for 5 years. My initial outbreak was one sore on my genitals. After that I would periodically get a cold sore. A month ago I had oral from a new partner who gets cold sores also. A day later they had a bump on their lip, and 4 days after I had a minor outbreak below the belt. I got blood work to be sure, and it still says positive for only type 2. I feel so lost as this hasn’t been an issue in years down there. I feel undesirable and gross. Just want to hear from anyone having this same issue? Deep down I’m still afraid it was type 2, although my dr says no due to how minor it was and bloodwork.

  119. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Frustrated!

This is a tough one. Did you get the initial HSV1 typed? The bump on the lip and your outbreak could be due to the friction during oral sex or even kissing. It would be extremely unlikely for you to pass HSV2 to your partner’s lip. Even more so since they have HSV1 already. The two viruses don’t like to co-exist in the same place.

    • Rad 8 years ago

      Hey Frustraded,
Even though it maybe type 2, fact is that type 2 orally chances are that it wont outbreak much.

Like Dex said, maybe it was not type 1 and it was type 2 on gens..

Outbreaks can occur most of the time when theres much friction, so sometimes if you there is none or mild friction outbreaks wont occur.

Lubrication could help to reduce the chances of frction..

This is why is more easy to pass this to a female than male; because of the sensitivity on getting a fissure on gens.

Just relax, type 1 or 2 are Almost identicall, some OB more than others.

But you will be fine, and your life will continue to be great i promise!

      Good Luck

  120. Mike 8 years ago

I have type 2 and my gf has type 1. What can and can’t we do? Do they cancel each other out? Can I give her type 2 and vice versa her give me type 1?
We are both a bit confused about our particular situation.

    • Rad 8 years ago

      Hi,
We have seen Type 2 on Swab Test and Type 1 on Swab on Gens on the same person, so yes it is possible.

But that said, Type 2 oral is so rare to have an outbreak that its hard to find a candidate “patient” to Swab and see it is Type 2.

If you dont have oral just avoid kissing while outbreak!

And same to you; if you have outbreak avoid sex while having it; and if you use protection and avoid sex while outbreak almost 0 chances to pass it on..

We have seen patients having 3-5 outbreaks a year and dont have sex while outbreak and havent pass it to partner in years!

But we have to remember we all are different; and shedding of the virus can ocurr even without having any symptoms!

In fact there is a high rate of people that have HSV and dont know they have it; because they dont have symptoms!

This is very veey common virus; just be happy and respect boundaries when you have outbreaks!! Just like when you are sick!

Other than that you will be ok!
      God Bless

  121. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Mike!

Ok, if she has HSV1 (Oral) then it is possible for you to give her HSV2 (Genital). It is also technically possible for her to pass HSV1 to you orally. If you have ever had a cold sore, then you already have the HSV1 antibodies. Since you have HSV2 down there, you can’t get HSV1 as well as the 2 viruses don’t like to live in the same place.

  122. Confused 8 years ago

I was newly diagnosed with HSV-1 on my genitals which I got from my boyfriend who also has HSV1 on his genitals and we do not have protected sex, since we share the same virus that I “caught” from him….

    1. Can I get HSV1 on my lips from giving him oral sex even though I am already a carrier of HSV1 on my genitals?
    2. Should we both be taking daily antivirals for HSV1 on the genitals? (Antivirals stop HSV from shedding, prevent outbreaks, shorten outbreaks, speed healing, and reduces transmission)
    3. Or should we watch and wait to see how our body reacts to the new virus since we are in a monogamous relationship, yet both have HSV-1 on the genitals and are recently diagnosed meaning it is both of our first year living with this virus?
    4. Do you recommend herbal supplements instead?
    5. Will it always appear in the same location or can it migrate to another location within the genital region?
    6. Can I use a bar of soap to clean myself or will that infect other areas?
    7. I can’t stop thinking about this morning, noon, and night…Can you give me some statistics on the HSV1 that might make me calm down, since I am always anticipating the next outbreak

    • RJ 8 years ago

      Hi,
      First of all BREATH ☺️.
      You will be fine!!

All the questions; are super common and great!

      You cannot re-infect yourself!!

If you have HSV 1 on gens, and time passes and all your antibodies are fighting!

You will not get on lips!

Type 1 on Gens shed lots less than type 2.. Those chances on passing type 1 through gens, are very rare! Did you had intercourse with an outbreak? Or with shedding symptoms??

Lysine helps, but overall just see what can trigger the OB.

Use soaps chances are almost 0 that you will reinfect. If have OB just don’t rub the bar, just in case.

Antivirals if you like!! Its up to you! To heal faster for comfort!

Almost all the time in same area, but can outbreak buttock area.

      My friend!!!
This is just as common as a cold!!
Even Celine Dion has Type 1!

Relax you will be fine this will not hurt or affect who you are!

Relax its ok and you will be great!

    Hi Confused!

RJ (Rad, is that you?) beat me to the response after I was almost done typing! His answers are perfect so I will post this anyway! Usually, if you have HSV1 already in your genital region, you don’t get it in your mouth. This is not always the case. It takes time to build up the antibodies so you could have it in both places if you were infected at the same time as HSV1 is spread by skin on skin contact. Once the antibodies start, it would be extremely rare to infect yourself on another body part.

Ok, I would suggest not taking antivirals or herbal remedies unless the outbreaks keep coming and are painful. At first, they will be. Your body will eventually fight it off and HSV1 is usually a lot less severe than HSV2. I know people who have been on Valtrex for years and the outbreaks went crazy when they got off of them. Some people need something to control the outbreaks, some don’t. If you can, see if your body will suppress it on its own. You both have HSV1 so you can’t give it to each other again.

It usually stays in the same place or the general area. Some outbreaks are worse than others.

Soap instantly kills the virus. It doesn’t live long outside of the body, anyway.

There are probably more people with HSV1 who don’t know or won’t admit it than those who do.

As RJ said above, this does not affect who you are. There are so many awesome people with this.

Yeah we were on a “break” in our long term relationship and he received oral sex from someone else, was extremely forth coming about it and by the time we got back together we were both having an outbreak days apart from each other and I feel really upset because I hate things beyond my control and I hate “flaws” that I cannot change. I have had such terrible anxiety and sleepless nights over what the future holds. Thank you so much for your clarification!

  125. Confused2 8 years ago

I prided myself on being the self proclaimed “STD police” using protection with all of my partners, never contracting an STD, being in long term monogamous relationships, asking my partners about their sexual history, never having a one night stand, and lecturing my friends about getting herpes even with a condom on. I was a self-proclaimed STD know-it-all.

I was with my boyfriend for 3 years and we broke up and got back together. He was very transparent with me and even admitted to receiving oral sex from another woman while we weren’t.

Our first date back together he made fun of the eczema I had on my hands insinuating “I must have caught something when we weren’t together” so we laughed it off.

He also was sure to use a condom because he didn’t believe me when I told him I hung out with another man, but was not intimate with him. I woke up the next day after having sex, telling him I had a dream he gave me herpes and we laughed that off too (I told you I am paranoid about STDs, it was my subconscious telling me).

4 days later we went out with a group of friends and I was explaining to the other women in the group how happy I was that we were back together, stating that I could not even begin to imagine dating again and being intimate with someone else because I’ve been in a monogamous relationship for 3 years and who knows what other people have been doing/”catching” the past 3 years!

A day after that I felt a bump which I attributed to my Brazilian wax, new scented body wash, and sandy day at the beach.

I went to the doctors twice after I had the bump swabbed and every doctor told me “it doesn’t look like herpes, I think you are fine, and you don’t engage in risky behavior”

Well come to find out I have HSV1 which I contracted from my boyfriend, which he contracted from the girl’s mouth who gave him oral sex.

I spent many feeling like how could this happen to me etc. but then I realized that I never had any exposure to the virus before and never had a cold sore that my body was fair game to the virus.

It is almost ironic how precautionary I have been being intimate with men and the unfortunate cards I’ve been dealt. I am trying to stay positive and remind myself that I am so healthy and take such good care of myself that I may never have another outbreak, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t have tremendous amounts of underlying anxiety.

Hi, I have a cold sore on my mouth and had just started to form from early morning and late night. As song as it was seen I had put abreva.
I had drank the same day and one thing lead to another because of to much alcohol long story short I was kissed and his mouth ending up on my genitals. I was constantly pushing him away from down there.
From what I remember when I was drinking a bit and not drinking my sore was still forming the fluid and not get busted.
My question is what are my chances of transmitting my oral to my genitals?

    • Rad 8 years ago

      Hi confessedandconfused,

Seems like youve had this cold sore for some time now. Fact is that you have your antibodues already in your system “active” and fighting everytime its shedding.

Because you already have certain type on oral, chances are almost none that you contract your the same virus in other part of the body.

You already have the antobodies fighting, so they dont have to star to build up, like when a new virus comes on.

Most importat is to disclose, because the other partner was at risk, orally and basicall if you did oral to him, he could be at risk.

Having HSV is not the end of the world; BUT everyone has to be responsible and avoid any chances that you can pass this to someone without this HSV.

      Other than that!!
Keep having fun, be responsible with your actions and decisions, disclouse everytime and finally Cheers ?!

  127. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Confessedandconfused!

The odds are that since you had a cold sore that you have had HSV1 already and your body started producing antibodies. So, the chances are low that you would get it in your genitals, as well. You would almost have to be exposed to the virus, in both places, at the same time or close to it.

I’m 56 and was diagnosed with HV2 two days ago. As the doctor explained it to me, I got it from my husband of 2 years. Suddenly, it all made sense. I’ve had 2 UTIs in 54 years… 13 UTIs in the last 2 years. The doctor explained to me that, yes, that’s a sign of getting infected. (yes, I’m that naïve or dumb). My husband maintains he has HV1, ONLY; so, now, if he has HV2 is because I infected him. I’ve found out he lies (yes, I’m shocked too). To give him the benefit of the doubt, could he have infected me with HV1 that became HV2 through oral sex?

    • Rad 8 years ago

      Hi Len,
Difficult to pin point right now!
UTI, very common in Women, but ask yourself you may have had various UTI on other times of your life; do they mean there were signs also?? Not neccesary!!

Thing is that HSV many times dont produce any symptoms at all, fact is that
More than 50% of the people with HSV dont know they have it and that is why it gets spread!

To say it was him, its very difficult to find out!! Only way is to him het tested for both HSV.. But even if hes positive, who gave to whom?? What came first the egg or the chicken??

Right now is more of trust issues than having HSV!!

I recommend dealing with this situation and both get tested for everything including HSV1 and 2, HIV etc and get everything out of the way and if its worth it, continue your life together and with more trust!

Take care and hope you get through this quickly! And you will i promise!

  129. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Len!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. To answer your question, HSV1 cannot become HSV2. Now, if he has HSV1 orally, could have given you in your genital area through oral sex. Do you know if you had the herpes typed? Sometimes, when it comes back positive for herpes in the genitals, they just assume it is HSV2 when it could be HSV1.

  130. Sel 8 years ago

I was diagnosed a few years ago with hsv-1 but never gave it to anybody and only had one outbreak which is when the doctors diagnosed but they also said I had a bacteria infection.amd yeast infection as well. An ex of mine cheated one at that time. Well years later I had two kids and got tested numberous times but never came up possitive for the hsv virus. Is it possible the doctors were wrong or that the virus left my system?

  131. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Sel!

As of right now, there is no cure for herpes. So, it would not have left your system. It can lay dormant but not disappear. In the latest tests, were you specifically tested for herpes? Most STD tests do not include a test for herpes so you have to specifically request it.

How long does it take to build up antibodies to help not get infected in another area with the same virus?

    • Rad 8 years ago

Dificult to tell, our bodies are different, but some says that 6-8 weeks, but from my experience working on this area, they build faster than that!!
      Dont worry you willbe fine!!

  133. Dex 8 years ago

    Hi Dee!

According to Johns Hopkins you cannot get infected in other areas of your body after the initial infection unless you infect those parts at the same time before the antibodies are present.

I get sores in my mouth like canker sores and I’ve gotten one on my tongue so I went and got a herpes test it came back negative. And it strange everytime I get dehydrated I break out in sores in my mouth what else could it be if it’s not herpes

  135. Dex 7 years ago

    Hi Carl!

How long have you had them before getting a herpes test? It can take weeks and sometimes months for the antibodies to show up for the tests. Of course, they could just be canker sores caused by an allergic reaction.

  136. Carl 7 years ago

I’ve been getting these for About two years. That’s what my doctor said that it could just be canker sores but it strange everytime I go back to work I basically get dehydrated and I get these in my mouth. The doctor said it could be stress r cutting my mouth and not knowing it. And it turns into canker sores it only happens at work I’ve never had them at home. And when I say at work I travel the country so I’m gone from home for weeks at a time.

Hi! My ex boyfriend gave me HSV-1 (genetal). I feel very upset like there is nothing left to my life. I was married for 20 years and that boyfriend was my only relationship after my husband passed away. So I am dealing with a lot of grief. I was wondering if you know of any support group in Lexington KY. I just can’t go through it by myself. All I want to do is just cry. I feel like the only person in the world who is sick with herpes. I feel like I will not be able to have a relationship ever again. How would I ever tell a person that I am sick?!
    Thank you.

You are NOT sick, this is like a common cold that comes and goes.

You surely know people that gets cold sore on the lips, well this is HSV1 also.

So if you and Celine Dion, went to a lab, you both will get positive on hsv.

Some studies says that almost 80% of people in US have cold sores.

Honey, don’t feel bad… this is NOTHING, Many times in most people type 1 like yours dont outbreak. So hopefully you eill have 1 or 2 – year and maybe none..

Close friends with gen hsv1 haven’t had outbreaks in 5yrs.

Hi there, thank you so much for the forum and responding to people’s questions.

I was diagnosed 3 and half years ago with HSV-1 genitally. From what I recall the outbreak wasn’t that bad and cleared pretty quickly on valtrex. I hadn’t had any outbreaks since then. Fast forward to now. I am 16 weeks post delivery and have been having significant pain and issues. I’ve gone to see the doctor tested for BV and nothing. My symptoms worry me that the virus has gone rogue and taking over my body. Is this possible?? I’ve been taking valacyclovir the last few weeks but have not actually had any lesions or sores. Could I be in a constant prodromal stage? Could the fact that I didn’t have any other outbreaks diminish my antibody production so now the virus is stronger?? My symtoms include:
    1) right side groin pain off and on
    2) sciatica like pain on right side, pain into
    Periformus
    3) random tingling ie upper lip twitches, vibrations, leg twitches etc even arm
    4) worst pain is the burning in my genital and perineum
    5) crawly/tingly vibrations in vaginal area

When I started getting the vaginal vibrations I thought was prodrome so started the valacyclovir. This has done nothing for these symptoms. Although a week ago the vibrations started I started valacyclovir right away and they stopped a day later … now they keep coming regardless of the valacyclovir.

Does this sound herpetic? Could I be having PHN similar to shingles? I thought hsv-1 was “better” type to have and should have less severe outbreaks?? Although I don’t actually have any lesions or areas that are sore… no typical burning or tingling in one spot either.

I’m so stressed and discouraged. I feel like the virus is taking over. I went from zero impact on my life, getting married, having a baby to not enjoying this time cause I’m in constant discomfort. I’m so worried the virus has morphed into something else and taking over and I’m in a constant prodromal phase? I can’t seem to find much or many with similar symptoms except for a few … is this a rare form? Are we SOL?

    Any insight would be great!

    Thank you!

  139. Forevaandeva 7 years ago

    I don’t see my post 🙁

  140. Dex 7 years ago

    Hi Forevaandeva!

Unfortunately, we have to moderate the posts. Everyone with a fake herpes cure, special balm or magic potion tries to spam the blog. Some are so ridiculous that they are almost comical. So, I am just getting to your post.

HSV can definitely rear its ugly head due to stress. Giving birth is definitely stressful on the body. A newborn (Congrats!) can also bring lack of sleep or the inability to get a full night’s sleep. It is entirely possible that you are just in a constant state of stress, your are worn down and don’t even realize it.

The Valacyclovir is probably helping your body hold back the virus so you may not have a visual outbreak. Therefore, you may notice the usual symptoms (Prodromal stage) you have before one appears.

As far as your symptoms go, it sounds like you are familiar with the early signs of an outbreak. They are different in everybody. HSV1 is usually less severe than HSV2 but can be as bad, especially if you are stressed. Antivirals just assist the body’s immune system but won’t prevent an outbreak.

To set your mind at ease, the herpes virus won’t morph into something else or spread to more parts of your body.

My advice would be to slow down, take a breath, keep taking the Valacyclovir and try to relax! If the symptoms don’t go away soon, you may want to visit the doctor for a stronger dose or try switching medications.

    I hope this helps!

I am sorry to ask a silly question. I was sure that I had HSV 1, because that’s what my ex has and I had all the symptoms (pain, bumps, swollen lymph nodes). But today I found out that my blood work and a swab results came negative. This would be 8 weeks after I would of gotten the virus and 3 weeks after the bumps appeared.
Can blood be negative for virus after the outbreak? Is there some other condition that can cause pain, bumps and swollen lymph nodes?
    Thank you so much!!!

    • Rad 7 years ago

      Hi Mary,
Well blood tests like Igg, could be negative the first weeks, 6-12 weeks.. This is because you are still building antibodies to fight this!! This is after infection!! You say ex boyfriend, how ling time ago?? If you contrscted this for example 6 o 8 months, your body has the antibodies, if you had intercourse with your ex 6-8 weeks ago, this could be the case that your antibodies havent reached the positive levels.

That said; you say swab test, do the blisters had liquid on them?? Many say swab and when they go to lab the blister is almost gone or healed, and sometimes its hard to get the liquid to have a accurate reading!

This is the most effective way to know, and if you did it right and it was taken appropiately then the chances are that you are negative..

      Regards

My partner and I both have HSV1. Mine is oral. Assuming hers is also oral, is there any risk of spreading it to her genitals by performing oral sex on her?

Does it make a difference if she has never had an outbreak?

  143. Dex 7 years ago

    Hi Kyle!

I wouldn’t worry about it. If you both have had HSV1 for a while then you would have built up antibodies. It also takes a couple of months or so for those antibodies to show up on a test. So, it would be extremely rare for you to spread it to another area on her body for this reason. I don’t say “Impossible” because I imagine it, technically, could be possible with a rare or extreme health issue.

  144. Kyle 7 years ago

    Thanks a bunch!

  145. David 7 years ago

I just found out a girl who gave me unprotected oral has hsv1 but she didn’t have any signs of an out break. How worried should I be. I’m obviously going to get tested but it just happened a couple days ago and I’m afraid I won’t get accurate results.

    • Dex 7 years ago

      Hi David!

I would say your chances are lower than you think. On one hand, it is very possible that you could now have HSV1 on your genitals. This is especially true if she had an active cold sore at the time. On the other, oral HSV1 is very common. Have you ever had a cold sore? If so, you have HSV1 already along with the antibodies so (Under normal circumstances) her HSV1 wouldn’t affect you. Oral HSV1 pretty much remains dormant most of the time, anyway. Otherwise, you would see a lot more people walking around with cold sores.

That being said, getting tested is still the best idea. That way, you know for sure. It can take 3-6 weeks for the antibodies to show up. You will have to wait to get tested because those antibodies are what the tests look for.

      I hope this helps!

  146. Tiffany 7 years ago

    Hi,

I’ve had HSV1 in the genital area for about 3 years now when a partner that had a cold sore went down on me. I’m currently with a new partner that also HSV1 but on his mouth. I’m not sure if I’m experiencing an outbreak right now however it’s not like my usual symptoms. It’s pretty itchy and looks a little flaky and crusty around the labia majora. I took valtrex just to be safe. I’m about to go on holiday with my partner in two days and was wondering if it’s safe to have sex. If it were indeed an outbreak, could he catch it in the genital area or has he built antibodies that he wouldn’t be reinfected down there. Also, would two days of valtrex be enough for us to have safe sex?

    • Dex 7 years ago

      Hi Tiffany!

I am not a doctor but you would have built up HSV1 antibodies already in your genitals so your partner can’t “Re-infect” you with the same virus. The same way goes for your partner. If he has been living with the oral HSV1 virus for long enough to build antibodies then he also wouldn’t get it in his genitals unless, maybe, there was some rare or extreme health issue. As far as the Valtrex dose goes, that all depends on you and how your body reacts to it.

I hope this helps and enjoy your holiday!

Ok so this is quit embarrassing! I’ve never ever had a cold sore! My fiancé was working out of state about 3 months ago. I found a few websites on his phone that I’m not happy about. Do I think he cheated on me?? I don’t think he would but something is telling me different now that I found all the shit on he’s phone. But anyway. We’ve not really had intercourse since he’s been home. But Friday night we decided to have some fun bc no kids home. We kissed and I gave oral and I wake up Saturday with this big cold sore! I see it and I get pissed.. he’s real defensive anytime I mention that I’ve never in my life had one! We’ve been together 3yrs this has never happened. If he did cheat on me, would this have time to kick in? Because he’s been home since end of November and we’ve only had intercourse maybe 3 times. So why just now? Or am I over reacting….. please help I’m very mad!!!

    • Rad 7 years ago

Overnight is not that easy to get a cold sore, maybe take various days to get it out to the open.
Hsv type 1 in mouth is so common, almost 80% of americans have coldsores..

Not Knowing exactly when he got this is a big challenge, sincerely almost impossible to know.

But ask him about the things you found on the phone.

Anyway, oral hsv is very common and wont affect nothing in your life!

      Take care and be safe

    Hi Nicole!

It is hard to say, given the information you supplied. There are just so many variables. It is very possible that he or yourself have had HSV1 all along and didn’t realize it. It usually takes 2-12 days after contact for symptoms of herpes to even show up.

    I hope this helps!

I recently found out i had hsv1 but now i don’t know what to do bc my partner have it now also he been freaking out… Help me please

  150. Dex 7 years ago

    Hi Monique!

First off….breathe. Do you have it orally or genitally? About 80% of the population have HSV1 orally, already.

I have been diagnosed for HSV1 (Oral) and I am sure that I have had it for a long time now. I never have any outbreaks from it. I am dating someone that has HSV2 (genital) and while I plan on taking precautions I know that there is a still a chance that I could get infected. Question is – since I never have outbreaks from the HSV1 does that mean that I will not have outbreaks from HSV2 as well (if I do contract it?).
    Thank You!

      Hi Curious1!
I wish I had an answer for you but there is no way to tell, for sure. While HSV1 and HSV2 are almost identical viruses, they can affect people very differently.

Me and my boyfriend have had cold sores in the past which I know is Hsv1, one night I gave him oral and now he has something below the belt and he says he got it from me but I am telling him he didn’t and that I can’t reinfect him with a virus that he has already had, he went to his doctor and said he has a cold sore and something on his genitals… could I have given him anything when he’s been sexually active before he me and I’m still a virgin?

  153. Dex 7 years ago

    Hi Camille!

Usually, the body will build up antibodies once infected by HSV 1 and 2. These HSV antibodies can take several months to form, completely. Once the antibodies have formed, it would be extremely difficult to reinfect yourself in the genital area assuming that you had oral HSV1. What may be more likely is that he was infected with HSV1, both oral and genital, at or around the same time before the antibodies had a chance to form. The oral sex (If rough) could have brought on an outbreak due to friction. The other scenario is that he has HSV2 (Genital). Since you are a virgin, I would highly recommend he get tested and you see the results before going forward just to play it safe.

    I hope this helps!

So to follow up “Me and my boyfriend have had cold sores in the past which I know is Hsv1, one night I gave him oral and now he has something below the belt and he says he got it from me but I am telling him he didn’t and that I can’t reinfect him with a virus that he has already had, he went to his doctor and said he has a cold sore and something on his genitals… could I have given him anything when he’s been sexually active before he me and I’m still a virgin?”
I’ve have already been tested and I am Hsv1 positive which I already knew and so did he, he’s been sexually active but says it’s been over 2 years and he hasn’t had any symptoms… could he have gotten this from a female in his past?

I’ve have already been tested and I am Hsv1 positive which I already knew and so did he, he’s been sexually active but says it’s been over 2 years and he hasn’t had any symptoms… could he have gotten this from a female in his past or this is his 1st outbreak so…

    Hi Camille!

I cannot give you a definitive answer other than “Maybe.” That is the thing with herpes, it affects people differently. While one person may have noticeable outbreaks, others might not be aware that they are even infected. That being said, it is possible that he has HSV2 and didn’t know he had it or didn’t recognize the symptoms and had a noticeable outbreak. It is also possible that he had HSV1 in is genital area and he had an outbreak. Of course, he could have just been infected with HSV2 (Not you) and that was his first outbreak. There are so many different possibilities.

So if I have hsv1 orally and my partner has it in his genitals, does that mean we could reinfect each other in different places…it we were to have intercourse without a condom?

      • Dex 7 years ago

        Hi T!

Under normal circumstances and if you both have had HSV for over a month (So the antibodies start to form) then you are good. He can’t give you his HSV1 when you already have it.

      • Rad 7 years ago

If you and your partner have all antibodies all build up; both have exact same virus and chances are close to 0 to re-infect, fact was your initial infection was on different area; and it could outbreak close to it.

I had sexual intercourse with a female in February after that 2 days later had a severe rash it comes and goes and at the end of April I had what look like a minor burn on penis tip after a month of On and of symptoms it turn in to a red painless bump and turn into scab it peeled off and now penis tip is red again and won’t go away it looks irritated could this be herpes and I’m taking antibiotics doctors said its balanitis or yeast infection

  156. Dex 7 years ago

    Hi Jesse!

The only way to know, for sure, is to go get tested. It will bring you peace of mind.

  157. Edgar Freedman 7 years ago

So you say 80% of the time it’s herpes. What could it mean the other 20%? I’m going to get tested today but I’d still like to know what else it could possibly be?

  158. Dex 7 years ago

    Hi Edgar!

That 80% number is the estimate of people who may already have HSV1 (Cold sores). We hope your test goes well!

I found out I had hsv 1 back in 2007. My first outbreak was horrible. But I only had outbreaks every 5 yrs following the first. What did realize is that abreva can be used topically on hsv 1 even on the genitals. Isn’t marketed that way because of the stigma but it does wonders. I use it along with valtrex and it really makes breakouts bearable. Hope this helps anyone else with hsv 1 genitally.

      Thanks for the suggestion Amanda!

    Hello,

So I was given HSV1 genitally by a cheating and dishonest boyfriend. It completely devastated me to the point where I was having horrendous anxiety and nightmares because I felt it was unfair since I didn’t engage in risk taking behaviors and I thought I was in a monogamous relationship.
Well fast foreword a year and a half later I have had no outbreaks or symptoms of this dumb virus with such a horrible stigma and I have never taken any prescription medications such as Valtrex during my first and only outbreak or as a daily suppressive therapy!!!!
Now that my self esteem is back and I have seen what little effect this has on my life I have finally had the confidence to ditch this jerk who made me feel like I was going to be hard to love again with my new diagnosis.
    With that being said……..
I want to get out there and start dating again and I find very little statistics on HSV1 genital transmission rates and the ones that I do find vary in there numbers. I was wondering if you knew the statistics for a HSV1 female transmitting the virus to an male without the virus WITH and WITHOUT taking suppressive medication without the use of condoms in a longterm monogamous relationship.
I want to make sure I am properly giving my future partner the right information while reducing his risks.

  161. confused2 6 years ago

I am only inquiring about the antivirals chances of diminishing infecting a future partner because I read your previous post where Dex wrote
“I would suggest not taking antivirals or herbal remedies unless the outbreaks keep coming and are painful. At first, they will be. Your body will eventually fight it off and HSV1 is usually a lot less severe than HSV2. I know people who have been on Valtrex for years and the outbreaks went crazy when they got off of them. Some people need something to control the outbreaks, some don’t. If you can, see if your body will suppress it on its own.”

I was not sure how to interpret that.

I want to go on suppressive therapy if it is going to drastically reduce my risks of transmitting the virus to someone else
But I do not want to go on suppressive therapy if the statistics of transmission is not vastly different with or without suppressive therapy since I fear outbreaks going crazy after getting off of suppressive therapy

    • Dex 6 years ago

      Hi Confused2!
Using condoms while on suppressive therapy should greatly reduce the chances of transmission. On the other hand, condoms don’t prevent the spread of herpes and suppressive therapy is more about controlling the outbreaks. The virus is still there and can still be passed to a partner. Since you have had no symptoms in a year and a half, your body is doing a great job of fighting it on its own. What you will need to pay attention to is the symptoms you get before an outbreak does happen. Another thing to be aware of, especially if you get into a new relationship, is that a lot of sex at first may trigger an outbreak with all that skin to skin contact. Take it slow. My advice? Get to know your body and the symptoms. Take the precautions that YOU feel comfortable with. Nobody wants to have sex with a full body condom. Most importantly, tell your potential partner about your unique situation so they have the choice that you did not. Millions of people with herpes go on to live normal lives, get married…etc. There is no reason you can’t do the same. I hope this helps!

I may have been in contact with a guy who has HSV-1. About a week later I saw pimple like bumps under my tongue. They were gone in about 3-4 days. Since then my tongue feels numb and has little, small bumps on the tip of the tongue. This has been like this for a week or so.

My main question and concern is can I get the virus through him sucking only on my nipples?

    • Dex 6 years ago

      Hi Felipe!
Herpes is transmitted from skin-to-skin contact. So, you most likely wouldn’t catch it on your tongue via your nipple.
