Clinicial Trials for a HSV2 vaccine

Central Kentucky Research Associates in Lexington, KY is now enrolling volunteers for a clinical research trial of an investigational therapeutic vaccine for HSV-2

UPDATED 8/29/2016

If you live in or around Lexington, KY and want to take part of a clinical research trial for a HSV-2 vaccine, there are spots available!  Greta BonDurant from Central Kentucky Research Associates just reached out to us to get volunteers for their new trial.  Of, course, we are always happy to help.

Here is her email:

I am writing to let you know that Central Kentucky Research Associates in Lexington, KY is now enrolling volunteers for a clinical research trial of an investigational therapeutic vaccine for HSV-2.

We are looking for people between the ages of 18 and 50 who have had HSV-2 for at least 1 year and who have had between 4 and 9 recurrences over the past 12 months to participate. We wanted to reach out to the support groups in this area to make them aware of the study, so any help you can offer in terms of spreading the word about this important study to your members would be greatly appreciated!

If you have any questions or would like some more information, I can be reached at 859-264-8999 or at the email address provided.

Thank you in advance for your time!
Greta BonDurant

We asked her for a website because these pages get a lot of traffic and didn’t want her phone to go crazy.  She replied, quickly:

Hi Dex,

The study has not yet been posted to our website … we are waiting for approval from the IRB (Institutional Review Board).  However, we should be getting approval within the next couple of days and I will post it to our site as soon as possible thereafter.  Nevertheless, we are in the process of prescreening patients, so anyone who is interested can contact us at 859-264-8999.  We will be happy to explain the study in detail and answer any questions potential participants may have.  For your reference, our website is www.CKRAresearch.com.

We are looking for as many participants as possible, so again, any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!  We would LOVE our phone to go crazy!!

Thanks Dex!

So, if you live in or around the area or know someone with herpes who does and wants to be part of this clinical trial, please get in touch with Greta.

What you are reading is all the information we have so you will have to contact them for any additional details.

Now, before anyone gets all excited, this clinical trial does not mention a cure for herpes.  If a vaccine is developed, that would be almost as good.  The good news is that we are seeing more trials for herpes being conducted.  This is a good thing and we would like to think they are getting one step closer to a cure.  These trials rely heavily on volunteers so if you live nearby, consider helping them out.

If you find out more, drop us an email so we can let others know!

In the meantime, keep your chins up and live well!

UPDATE: The webpage is up for Central Kentucky Research Associates where you can sign up for their clinical trial for herpes (Genital, HSV2) vaccine.

You can fill out the inquiry here:

I’m 26 years old, I was diagnosed with HSV-2 at age of 22. I get outbreaks every 2 months. I do not take any medication for it, never had. I would like to volunteer. I live in Miami, FL, but I’m willing to travel to Kentucky. A lot of people get over the fact they have the virus and live happy, but that’s not my case. This virus has ruined my life.

    Hi Yaremi!

Hopefully, they are getting a good supply of volunteers. On a side note, if you have had herpes for 4 years and are getting an outbreak every two months then you may want to consult a doctor for a prescription for an antiviral to help fight them off. The first year is usually the worst but the OBs generally subside over time.

Living With Hsv 2 last 25 years ago

    • Dex 7 years ago

      Hi Sam!
It is so much easier living with herpes today than it was 25 years ago, especially with the internet. Hopefully, it won’t be another 25 years for a cure or vaccine.

      Hi Kimberly!

Are you taking any antiviral meds? They should help control your outbreaks if your body’s immune system cannot do it on its own.

Hi, I am very interested in please knowing if you have any studies coming up in or around North Carolina or South Carolina? Because I was raped at 22 and got genital HSV-1 but rarely had outbreaks luckily and never took anything for it until I turned 42 and got HSV-2 from someone I thought was a long time friend and now I have frequent outbreaks because I can’t stop thinking about it now and have become resistant to zovirax for outbreaks because I am 44 now and valtrex for suppression actually makes me have outbreaks when I take it it seems like now so I can’t take that anymore so I am basically losing hope except I am going to now try lysine because I googled it and see if it helps HOPEFULLY!! But thanks for your reply if possible 🙂

      Hi Jacqueline!
I am so sorry to hear about your situation. While having HSV1 (Oral) and HSV2 (Genital) at the same time is possible, having the two in the same place is highly unlikely. Usually, only one or the other virus lives in a specific region. For example, if you have genital HSV1, I don’t believe you can also be infected with HSV2 in the same area. If so, it would be extremely rare especially since you have had genital HSV1 for so long. I have not even heard of a case of this happening. That being said, many of our members use and recommend Lysine because Valtrex doesn’t agree with them. So, go ahead and give it a try! Let us know how it works for you!

Hi, actually if you Google HSV-1 on the genitals you will see it comes up as being true and actually if someone has it HSV-1 orally and performs oral sex on someone male then that male person can get HSV-1 and then if he has sex with a female unprotected she can then get genital HSV-1 so you see what I am saying and she can also be reinfected with HSV-2 separately on the genitals also which IS exactly what happened to ME…so I am NOT really quite sure why you find that hard to believe? As IT’S true AND factual… just Google it if you don’t believe me and you will see for yourself… although I believe I definitely explained it thoroughly for you so you should understand it well I hope? Thanks for your understanding….

And I also have done plenty of herpes research online and reading of reviews on suppression meds and saw people saying in reviews and posting online asking questions for help about how they had BOTH HSV-1 and HSV-2 on the genitals and I noted that I was not the only one PLUS it also says in reports online that with having both herpes you will have more frequent outbreaks which of course I DO so it’s the truth….. so I am speaking from FACT because I KNOW I have both of them from a blood test at the Doctor’s office and I have never had a cold sore on my mouth in my life!!

      Hi Jacqueline!
Thank you for the detailed explanation and I hear what you are saying. I am not saying that it is impossible, just that your case is the first that I have heard of. They are pretty much the same virus other than the preference where they live. There are only a handful of cases of reported oral HSV2. In either case, both types can be treated the same.

I just turned 51 years and I have HSV2 for 20 years. I am from north Carolina, and where can I go for volunteer? I get breakout every 4 to 6 weeks. Whenever I get breakout my stress level is so high and I wanted that end for good.

    • Dex 6 years ago

      Hi Michael!
We don’t know of any current testing going on at the moment. Once we hear something, we will post it. Now, stress is a well-known cause of outbreaks. It is your body’s way of telling you to slow your roll to a steady stroll. Stress is not a good thing. Learn to relax or turn it down a few notches and you will be much happier.
